A look at how the current top 30 prospects did today. Note that this list doesn’t include players currently in the majors. If a player is in the majors, he will be removed, everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. If a player is out for the season (Nick Kingham, Jacob Taylor), he will be removed and everyone below him will move up a spot. Removing these guys doesn’t mean they have lost prospect status. It is just an attempt to get 30 active prospects on the list. Rankings are from the mid-season update, and links on each name go to their Pirates Prospects player pages.

Indianapolis needed a win on Sunday if they wanted to keep their division title hopes alive. Chris Volstad did his part with seven shutout innings, but closer Blake Wood allowed three runs in the ninth inning for the walk-off loss. Indianapolis now has the wild card spot in the International League, with playoffs starting on Wednesday.
Josh Bell had his 20-game on base streak snapped with an 0-for-4 game, but he still finished the season with a .347 average in 35 games since his promotion from Altoona. He committed his third error with Indianapolis, and 16th on the season.
Keon Broxton fell one stolen base short of becoming the first Pirates’ minor league player in 48 years to reach double digits in doubles, triples, homers and steal 40 bases. Gorkys Hernandez finished strong with an eight-game hitting streak that included six multi-hit games.
Willy Garcia went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. His biggest issues before this season were his walks and strikeouts. Both were among the worst in the organization. He didn’t improve the walks, actually getting worse with 23 in 514 plate appearances, after walking 24 times in 474 plate appearances last year. However, he “only” struck out 123 times this season, after 145 last year, so that is quite an improvement.

Altoon clinched their playoff spot on Saturday night, so the season finale didn’t have much drama attached. The Curve even chose to skip Chad Kuhl and move his next game to a playoff start, using Thomas Harlan as the starter instead. The only thing to watch for in this contest was the Eastern League batting title. Adam Frazier came into the day with a .321 average and a four point lead for first. Since the second place player was injured and hasn’t played since mid-August, Frazier just had to stay ahead of him. An 0-for-5 game would have dropped him back .0002 into second place, but Frazier took away that drama early with a third inning single and later added two more hits in the 12-inning loss.
Austin Meadows went 2-for-6 with a walk in this game, hitting his second double. He finished his brief time at Altoona with a .360 average. His stole his 21st base of the season in this game. His 163 hits this year are the most by a Pirates’ minor league player since Brock Holt had 165 in 2012.
Eric Wood went 4-for-6 and drove in two runs. Sebastian Valle had three hits. Jonathan Schwind went 0-for-7 at the plate, but he threw three scoreless innings. Andy Vasquez allowed a two-run homer in the 12th for the loss. Vasquez was hitting 91 mph with his fastball.
Bradenton has completed their season.

West Virginia won their season finale by a 9-3 score, giving them a 50-20 record in the second half of the season. They clinched their playoff spot over a week go, but that didn’t slow them up on offense in this game. Every player in the lineup had at least one hit and the team recorded seven doubles in the contest.
Michael Suchy had two of those doubles, giving him 34 on the season. He drove in three runs in this game to give him 76 RBIs, which gives him the third most behind Josh Bell(78) and Jose Osuna(81). Jerrick Suiter went 1-for-3 with two walks, finishing with a .299 average. Elvis Escobar added his 28th double and finished three points behind Suiter for the top average.
Kevin Newman didn’t do so well in the NYPL, hitting .226 in 38 games. He had a much better time in Low-A, looking like a first round pick with his .306 average in 23 games with West Virginia. Newman stole his 13th base of the season in this game. Pablo Reyes went 2-for-4 with his 24th double and 27th stolen base.
Alex McRae started and went six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk. He recorded 13 ground ball outs. Three relievers followed him, each throwing a perfect inning.

Morgantown needed to win on Sunday to clinch the wild card spot in the NYPL and Jonathan Brubaker gave them six strong innings, while the offense did the rest in the 8-2 victory. Brubaker came into the game with an 0.95 WHIP, which was the best in the NYPL. He ended up allowing one run on five hits and no walks for the win, lowering his ERA to 2.82 in the process.
Casey Hughston connected on his second homer, a three-run shot in the eighth inning. He has had a tough season, with one terrific stretch in the middle, followed by two prolonged slumps. He finished with a .224 average and 71 strikeouts in 219 at-bats. Mitchell Tolman finished with a .304 average after going 2-for-5 with his 16th double. He drove in two runs. Tolman had at least two hits in eight of his last ten games. Danny Arribas had two hits to extend his hit streak to 14 games.
Ke’Bryan Hayes went 1-for-4, giving the 18-year-old a .220 average in 12 games with Morgantown. Carlos Munoz went 0-for-3, finishing with a .150 average after being called up from Bristol. Logan Hill went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts.
