Prospect Watch: Steven Brault Throws Eight Shutout Innings

P2 Top 30

A look at how the current top 30 prospects did today.  Note that this list doesn’t include players currently in the majors. If a player is in the majors, he will be removed, everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. If a player is out for the season (Nick Kingham, Jacob Taylor), he will be removed and everyone below him will move up a spot. Removing these guys doesn’t mean they have lost prospect status. It is just an attempt to get 30 active prospects on the list. Rankings are from the mid-season update, and links on each name go to their Pirates Prospects player pages.

P2 Game Notes

INDIANAPOLIS – After breaking a four-game hitting streak Wednesday night, Willy Garcia bounced back in a big way on Friday night. Garcia had a pair of hits, including a ripped double to left center on an elevated 3-2 pitch on an eight pitch at bat. Along with the double, Garcia also nailed a runner at home for his 10th outfield assist in 64 games with Indianapolis on a seemingly effortless throw.

Keon Broxton also had a six-game hit streak broken on Wednesday, but came back on Friday with an RBI triple in the first inning, his eighth with Indianapolis. Gorkys Hernandez added another base hit to extend his current streak to five. He also added a pair of stolen bases. Hernandez now has a stolen base in three straight games and six in his last six contests.

After having an eight-game hit streak, Alen Hanson went hitless again on Friday night. After hitting a home run last night, John Bowker added a double to cut the deficit to one, but Indianapolis would not get any closer.

Matt Benedict retired the first 10 hitters of the game before allowing three straight hits, including back-to-back home runs that proved to be the difference in the game. A.J Morris allowed just two hits in 4.2 scoreless innings of relief. – Ryan Palencer

P2 Game Notes

This game almost wasn’t fair for Binghamton, though it was partially their own fault. They were facing Steven Brault, who came into the game with a 1.10 ERA in his last nine starts. Binghamton decided to use this game to rest three of their starters, plus they lost one of their starters(former Pirate Josh Rodriguez) to a call-up to AAA yesterday. Their leading hitter is also out injured, plus it’s an NL vs NL game, so the pitcher was in the lineup. All that led to a dominating pitching facing a skeleton of a regular lineup and the results were extremely predictable from the start.

Brault threw eight scoreless innings, throwing a total of 98 pitches, 63 for strikes. He worked down in the zone and used both sides of the plate, only allowing three singles that were all ground balls that found a hole. Brault himself had three hits and scored two runs. The only thing he did wrong in this game was a 5:8 GO/AO ratio, but none of those fly balls were hit that deep. He had no walks and five strikeouts. This game was as dominating as it sounds, with Brault working very quick and pounding the strike zone. This was his last start of the season and he finished with a 2.00 ERA in 90 innings for Altoona.

The Curve put runs on the board early in this game, scoring twice in the first and three times in the second inning. Max Moroff had a double, two walks, scored twice and drove in a run. Austin Meadows had two hits, including his first double with Altoona. He also reached on a hit-by-pitch. Meadows is 4-for-12 in three games with the Curve. Jacob Stallings had two hits and drove in two runs. He had six hits and drove in four runs in the series that just wrapped up against Bowie. Stetson Allie added a solo homer in the fifth inning, his 17th of the season. He also made a fine sliding catch in foul territory down the right field line.

P2 Game Notes

Bradenton went into a three-game series this week against first place Palm Beach, trailing by five games in the standings, with little hope of the playoffs since the Cardinals held the tie-breaker. The Marauders made a run, sweeping the Cardinals and winning on Thursday, while Palm Beach lost, which brought them to within one game. Unfortunately, their run ended on Friday with a 4-1 loss and a 4-1 victory by the Cardinals.

Cody Dickson started and looked good early, then fell apart in the fifth, giving up all four runs. He went 4.2 innings and struck out six, ending his season with a 4.13 ERA in 141.2 innings. The bullpen kept St Lucie from putting anymore runs on the board.

The Marauders didn’t bring their bats to this game, with two singles and three walks all game. Justin Maffei scored the only run and it took some help. He walked, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball. Harold Ramirez is now hitting .334 after going 0-for-4 in this game. He stole his 22nd base of the season after reaching on a throwing error. Bradenton has two games left in their season.

P2 Game Notes

Austin Coley won his 16th game on Friday, extending his Power team record in a 7-1 win. He gave up one run over seven innings, giving him four straight starts with one earned run allowed, three of them being seven inning outings. He finishes the year with a 3.66 ERA in 147.2 innings. Edgar Santana finished the game off with two scoreless frames.

Taylor Gushue had two hits in this game, scored twice and drove in two runs. Pablo Reyes connected on his 22nd double in the seventh inning, bringing home two runs. Jerrick Suiter scored two runs, giving him five runs scored in the last two days, despite collecting just one base hit total. Kevin Newman left yesterday’s game an inning after he was hit by a pitch. That led to Kevin Kramer making his first start at shortstop for the Power and just his third start there this year. Kramer went 0-for-4 and committed an error. He had five hits in his last game with Morgantown, but he’s 8-for-38 since being promoted.

P2 Game Notes

Morgantown lost a big game on Friday night, dropping a 2-0 decision to Williamsport. They were in tough against Mitch Gueller, who won his tenth game, which is fairly difficult to do in a short-season league. The Black Bears had eight hits and two walks, but they went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base. They are now tied for the wild card lead with three games left. Ke’Bryan Hayes had two hits and he is now 6-for-17 with five walks in his last six games.

Bret Helton started the game and pitched well over four innings, allowing one run, which was unearned. Cesilio Pimentel followed him and threw two shutout innings, striking out four batters.

Carlos Munoz pinch-hit in this game and struck out. That is significant because he never struck out in four straight games at any point in his five-year career. That was before he came to Morgantown though, where he has now struck out in all five games he has played, twice while only pinch-hitting in the game. He is 2-for-11 with six strikeouts. Munoz had 21 strikeouts in 206 at-bats with Bristol this year, so he is not having a good time with the better pitching.

At the start of the season, Logan Hill looked like a steal in the 25th round, but he has really crawled to the finish line. In the last three weeks, he is 4-for-35, watching his average drop 39 points. At the time the slump started, he was near the top in the batting title race, but he has barely played the last week and only came into this game in the sixth inning.
