Brent Morel Designated For Assignment

Published:

Well, that was quick.

Brent Morel has been designated for assignment by the Pirates, in order to clear a spot on the 25-man roster for Aramis Ramirez, per a team press release. Morel came up on Monday to give the Pirates an extra infielder after Jordy Mercer went on the disabled list. He came up with a big hit in last night’s game, but ultimately he didn’t have a spot on the team after the Pirates quickly worked to add Aramis Ramirez.

Morel will likely go unclaimed, at which point he would be outrighted to Indianapolis. He could opt to decline that assignment and become a free agent, although he’d just end up signing elsewhere to play in Triple-A if that was the case.

The move leaves an open spot on the 40-man roster, which could be filled in the next week with outside additions.
