The Pittsburgh Pirates have optioned pitcher Wilfredo Boscan to Indianapolis. No move has been made to fill his roster spot yet, but the Pirates are expected to call up a position player to take his place. Boscan was added to the 40-man roster and called up on Saturday in case the Pirates needed an arm out of the bullpen after all seven relievers worked in Friday’s game, with three of them going multiple innings. It was Boscan’s first time in the Majors, though he didn’t get into either Saturday or Sunday’s game.
Without making a 40-man roster move, the most likely position player to be called up is Tony Sanchez. The current 40-man roster has three injured players, Jaff Decker, Andrew Lambo and Justin Sellers. Willy Garcia, Elias Diaz and Alen Hanson all have no big league experience, and that leaves Steve Lombardozzi, who can’t be recalled until May 26th(10 day waiting period). Hanson has been hitting very well lately, though it is unlikely the Pirates call him up for a short-term appearance.
