Pirates Prospect Watch: Termarr Johnson Doubles in AFL Win

Published:

Termarr Johnson went 1-for-4 with a double on Tuesday in the Arizona Fall League.

The hit came with one out in the fifth inning, and eventually set up the third run of the game for Scottsdale. It was the second double of the AFL season for Johnson, who also has two triples and a homer. After the hit, Johnson is batting .300 with a 1.0622 OPS.

Johnson has reached base safely in each AFL game this season, displaying his power as a complement to his foundation of plus plate patience and contact skills. The 2024 season wasn’t a great one for Johnson from a numbers standpoint. He did reach Double-A by the end of the season, and is now doing well in a small sample against advanced pitchers in the AFL. While the 2024 season had its ups and downs, Johnson is definitely finishing the year on a positive note.

ARIZONA FALL LEAGUE

SCOTTSDALE won 8-6

  • 2B Termarr Johnson: 1-for-4, 2B
  • LF Sammy Siani: 0-for-5
  • RHP Khristian Curtis: 0.1 IP, 2 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 1 HR

The other two Pirates prospects didn’t perform as well as Johnson. Sammy Siani went 0-for-5, having his worst game in the AFL. He was the best player in the league from the Pirates’ system last week. Even after this 0-for-5, he is hitting .367 with a .939 OPS.

Khristian Curtis came on to pitch the fifth inning, but only recorded a single out while allowing five runs, with four earned. He allowed an inside the park homer to his first batter. A single to the next hitter was followed by three straight walks. Curtis rebounded with a strikeout, before a runner reached on a fielder’s choice error, allowing two runs to score to tie the game. That ended the night for Curtis, who was responsible for one more run that later scored on a balk.

STATCAST HEROES

Termarr’s Double: 103.8 MPH, 325 feet

Curtis Stuff: While the outing didn’t go well for Khristian Curtis, he did have one of the hardest pitches thrown, and he recorded four whiffs. Three were against his four-seam fastball. One was against the cutter. The downside is he threw the four-seam in the zone 22% of the time, and threw the cutter 33%. Curtis received no chase on the offspeed, and below-average chase against the fastball. The fastball sat 94.8 MPH, ranging 92.9-96.8 MPH.
