Pirates Prospect Watch: Sammy Siani Doubles in Three Hit Day

Sammy Siani had a three hit night in the Arizona Fall League on Friday.

The day started with a double in the second inning. The 105.3 MPH shot was the third double of the AFL season for Siani. The play almost led to a run, but the runner at first was thrown out at the plate. Siani was later stranded on third base.

Siani singled in the fourth inning, and eventually scored the third run of the game to put Scottsdale up 3-2 at the time. He walked and scored on a homer in the fifth inning.

With Scottsdale down 10-9, and two outs in the ninth inning, Siani delivered his third hit of the day. The single put runners at first and second. A strikeout to the next batter ended the game.

Siani is now hitting for a .410 average and a 1.016 OPS in 42 AFL plate appearances.

SCOTTSDALE lost 10-9

  • RF Sammy Siani: 3-for-4, 2B, BB
  • SS Termarr Johnson: 1-for-5, RBI
  • RHP Valentin Linarez: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
  • RHP Eddy Yean: 1.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

Termarr Johnson had one hit, picking up an RBI single in the fourth inning. Valentin Linarez pitched two scoreless innings, taking the second and third innings of work. He struck out two and walked one. Eddy Yean came in to pitch in the fifth with two runners on base and four runs already scored. Yean allowed two runs to score to tie the game. He returned to pitch the sixth inning, allowing the go-ahead run.

STATCAST HEROES

Siani Hits: Aside from the 105.3 MPH double, which traveled 398 feet, Siani also had singles of 98.4 and 93.0 MPH.

Termarr Single: The single from Termarr Johnson was hit at 100.2 MPH.

Linarez Whiffs: Valentin Linarez works with a two-pitch mix, using a four-seam fastball and a slider. The four-seam had five whiffs on 17 swings, sitting 91.1 MPH and topping out at 94.5 MPH. The slider had three whiffs on three swings against seven pitches.

Yean Velocity: He didn’t have a good outing, but Eddy Yean had some of the best velocity in the game. His fastball sat 963 MPH and touched 97.3. The pitch didn’t get any swing and miss, and was thrown in the zone 38% of the time, with only a 20% chase rate.
