Pirates Prospect Watch: Geovanny Planchart Doubles in AFL Debut

Published:

Geovanny Planchart picked up a hit in his first game in the Arizona Fall League.

The 23-year-old catcher went 1-for-3 with a double on Wednesday night for Scottsdale. Planchart drove in a run with the hit. He also drew a walk in his final at-bat.

Behind the plate, Planchart was tested. He went 1-for-4 in caught stealing attempts, with his caught stealing being the result of a pickoff at first base. He also had a passed ball and a throwing error.

Planchart spent the 2024 season in Greensboro, with a brief look in Altoona. He stands out for his defensive abilities behind the plate, while being limited offensively. He hit for a .675 OPS in Greensboro this year, before going 2-for-9 with three walks in Altoona. Planchart should return to Double-A full-time next year.

It wasn’t a good game for the Pirates pitchers. Brandan Bidois took over in the third inning with one out, a runner on first, and a 2-2 score. He allowed a single and a double to the first two hitters, bringing in a run. Bidois struck out the next batter, but the batter reached and a run scored on a wild pitch. Bidois recorded one out before allowing a bases loaded, bases clearing double to make the score 9-2, ending his day.

Derek Diamond pitched the final two innings. He retired the side in order in the eighth inning, getting a line out and two ground outs. The ninth inning saw two strikeouts sandwiching a hit batter and an RBI double. Diamond allowed another double, a wild pitch, a walk, and three runs to score on a fielding error before recording the final out.

Bidois and Diamond both pitched for Greensboro this year. Diamond was a starter with a 4.80 ERA in 95.2 innings, along with an 83:19 K/BB. Bidois was a reliever with a 4.25 ERA in 29.2 innings, and a 43:17 K/BB. They both could pitch in Altoona in 2025.
