The Pittsburgh Pirates have made a few roster moves heading into the final week of the 2024 MLB season. They designated first baseman Rowdy Tellez and center fielder Michael A. Taylor for assignment. With the roster spots, the Pirates called up Joshua Palacios and Liover Peguero.
Tellez finished the season batting .243/.299/.392 with 13 home runs. He had better numbers from the start of June, hitting .277/.330/.478 with 12 of those homers. He started to struggle again in September, with a .116 average and a .464 OPS.
Last month, the Pirates placed Taylor on outright waivers, but no team claimed him. He hit .193/.253/.290 with five homers and 12 stolen bases this year for the Pirates. The offensive performance had Taylor as one of the worst hitters in the game. His defense was among the best.
Palacios has spent time in the Majors this year, with a .663 OPS across 61 at-bats. He had a .291/.372/.489 line in Triple-A this year, with the season ending on Sunday.
Peguero didn’t have a good season in Triple-A. He hit .257/.319/.410 in 495 at-bats, resulting in a below-average OPS. The infielder started the season in a race for the starting second base job, and finishes with a one-week callup off the bench.
It will be interesting to see if the Pirates call up any pitchers for the final week. They now have two open spots on the 40-man roster. They also have Mike Burrows on the 40-man, after making his most recent Triple-A start on Sunday.
