Pirates Prospect Watch: Termarr Johnson Reaches Base Five Times in Altoona Win

Published:

Termarr Johnson had three hits and reached base safely five times in Altoona’s 10-3 win on Friday night.

Johnson led off the bottom of the first with a walk, followed by a steal of second. It was his second steal at the Double-A level. He was then caught stealing third base for the second out of the inning.

In the top half of the second, Johnson committed an error at second base that eventually led to an unearned run in a two-run inning.

Altoona went down 2-0 early. In the third inning, Johnson hit a two out single that ended up resulting in nothing after he was stranded. Altoona was down 3-0 in the sixth inning. Johnson put them on the board for the first time with an RBI double, his second at the level. He later scored from third on a passed ball to put the Curve behind 3-2 after six.

Altoona took the lead in the seventh inning, and Johnson came up with one out and a runner at second with a 5-3 lead. After drawing a walk, Johnson would eventually make it around to score the fifth of six runs in the inning. Altoona led 8-2 heading into the eighth inning.

Johnson picked up his third hit of the night, driving in the ninth run of the game. Altoona scored two in the eighth, finishing with a 10-3 win. Johnson reached base five times, scored twice, and had two RBIs. He had an early base running miscue, followed by an error in the field. Johnson provided an offensive spark the rest of the game, while being challenged with a lot of plays in the field and a lot of time on the bases. He handled the challenge well.

Woodford Recap: Ten called strikes on the sinker led to a 50% CSW on the most-used pitch, with one whiff each from the sweeper and four-seam. Woodford sat 92.3 MPH, touching 94.1, working mostly off a sinker/sweeper combo.

DOUBLE-A: ALTOONA CURVE

ALTOONA won 10-3, with help from Termarr Johnson’s three hit game.

  • LHP Anthony Solometo: 5.0 IP, 9 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K

  • SS Tsung-Che Cheng: 1-for-4, 2B, RBI

Anthony Solometo was a big reason why Altoona was able to win without scoring until the sixth inning. His only runs came in the second inning, due to three hits surrounding an error. Solometo gave up a ground rule double with the bases loaded, bringing in both runs. He followed the double with a strikeout, pop out, and fly out. He pitched himself out of jams in the fourth and fifth inning, stranding runners at third with one out in each inning. Both times he had a key strikeout for the second out. Tsung-Che Cheng tied the score at 3-3 with an RBI double in the seventh inning. Kervin Pichardo scored the tying run, and later knocked in two runs with a single in the same inning.
