Pirates Transactions: Andrew McCutchen to the IL, Alika Williams Recalled

Published:

The Pittsburgh Pirates placed designated hitter Andrew McCutchen on the 10-day injured list before Saturday’s game, due to left knee inflammation. McCutchen came up limping on Friday night, after hitting a single in the seventh inning.

Alika Williams was recalled to Pittsburgh to replace McCutchen. Later in the seventh inning, Oneil Cruz went down with ankle discomfort. Cruz is in the lineup on Saturday as a designated hitter, and Williams provides added shortstop depth off the bench with the starting shortstop banged up.

Williams had hits in six of his nine starts this month in Triple-A, after hitting .369/.461/.415 in Indianapolis last month.

The Pirates also announced that left-handed pitcher Ryan Borucki would begin a rehab assignment with Indianapolis. Borucki has been out since April 5th, and previously had a rehab assignment that spanned from June 25th through July 23rd. He was then shut down for a few weeks, dealing with a nerve issue.

In minor league transaction news:

  • 15th round pick Ethan Lege was added to the Bradenton roster on Friday.
  • Catcher Justin Miknis was transferred from Bradenton to the development list.
  • LHP Hunter Furtado was activated from the 7-day IL in Bradenton.
  • RHP Chris Gau was released from Altoona’s roster.
