Pirates Prospect Watch: Charles McAdoo Is Greensboro’s Most Consistent Hitter

Published:

Charles McAdoo has been the most consistent hitter in High-A Greensboro this year. On Tuesday night, McAdoo went 3-for-6 with his ninth homer of the year and five RBIs, leading Greensboro to an 11-5 victory.

McAdoo got the scoring started in the first inning with the two run homer. He knocked in two more in the second inning with a line drive single to right field. McAdoo had another two RBI single in the seventh inning, this time on a line drive to center field.

On the season, McAdoo is batting .337/.410/.560 in 222 plate appearances. Drafted out of San Jose State in the 13th round last year, this is the first full-season in pro ball for McAdoo. He has the nine home runs, while also stealing 11 bases on 13 attempts. He hit .302/.412/.510 in his brief time in Bradenton last year, following the draft. His numbers this year, while similar, have come as a result of more consistent production.

At this rate, McAdoo is putting himself in position to be a promotion candidate to Double-A by the end of the summer. He’s spent most of his time this year at third base, but he’s also played first, second, and the corner outfield spots as a pro. He should have no problem finding playing time when he eventually moves up to the next level.

TRIPLE-A: INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS

INDIANAPOLIS lost 2-1

  • RHP Daulton Jefferies: 5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 1 HR
  • RF Joshua Palacios: 2-for-4
  • 1B Malcom Nunez: 1-for-3, BB
  • CF Matt Gorski: 1-for-3, BB
  • LF Gilberto Celestino: 1-for-3, BB

Joshua Palacios returned to Indianapolis for the first time since April 10th, after spending about two months rehabbing an injury in A-ball. He went to Bradenton from April 30th through May 11th, then sat out before starting a rehab appearance in Greensboro on June 4th. The outing from Daulton Jefferies was his best since joining the Pirates in a trade on May 10th.

STATCAST HEROES

Jefferies didn’t get a lot of swing and miss, with an overall 16% whiff rate. His best pitch in that regard was his slider, with two whiffs on eight swings. He had 16 called strikes, with nine on the sinker. That gave him an overall 30% called and swinging strike rate on 71 pitches.

DOUBLE-A: ALTOONA CURVE

ALTOONA lost 11-2

  • RHP Thomas Harrington: 5.0 IP, 10 H, 6 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 2 HR
  • 1B Seth Beer: 2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI
  • CF Jase Bowen: 1-for-4, 2B
  • 3B Joe Perez: 1-for-4
  • RHP Emmanuel Chapman: 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Thomas Harrington allowed five unearned runs in the fifth inning, after an error from Seth Beer extended the inning. Earlier in the game, Beer provided all of the Altoona offense with a two run homer in the first inning. It was the fourth homer of the year for Beer, following Jase Bowen’s ninth double.

HIGH-A: GREENSBORO GRASSHOPPERS

GREENSBORO won 11-5, led by Charles McAdoo’s ninth home run.

  • LHP Hunter Barco: 2.2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 4 K
  • RHP Alessandro Ercolani: 3.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 1 HR
  • SS Termarr Johnson: 1-for-4, BB, SB
  • 2B Mitch Jebb: 1-for-4, 2B, BB, SB
  • LF Hudson Head: 2-for-6, 2B

Hunter Barco had some rare control problems in his latest start. The lefty has walked 19 batters in 47 innings this year, but six of those walks have come in his last two starts, spanning 4.2 innings. Alessandro Ercolani has been working in relief, making his second straight three inning appearance. He’s allowed one run in those six innings, with nine strikeouts and one walk. Mitch Jebb and Hudson Head each hit their fourth doubles of the season.
