Pirates Prospect Watch: Patrick Reilly Throws Five No-Hit Innings

Published:

Patrick Reilly threw five no-hit innings for the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Friday, leading the High-A team to a 5-0 victory.

Reilly was drafted in the fifth round last year out of Vanderbilt, and features promising stuff from a middle round college pitcher. The right-hander has a fastball that sits mid-90s, along with a sinker, cutter, slider, and changeup. He’s dealt with control issues in his career, but he works quickly and changes pace well with his stuff, making him difficult to hit.

Reilly has a 4.95 ERA in 36.1 innings across nine starts this year. The walks have added up in some outings, with 20 free passes on the season. He has 51 strikeouts on the year, and just a .206 batting average against. If Reilly can gain better control, he could emerge as a starting prospect in the upper levels. For now, his stuff looks good enough to eventually be a relief option in the majors, with a chance to improve with more innings for now as a starter.

TRIPLE-A: INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS

INDIANAPOLIS lost 12-0.

  • DH Henry Davis: 1-for-4, 2B
  • RF Jake Lamb: 1-for-4
  • CF Gilberto Celestino: 2-for-3
  • RHP Daulton Jefferies: 3.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
  • RHP Ben Heller: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K

Indianapolis had a rough game, getting held to four hits and zero runs on offense, with three of the four pitchers giving up at least one run per inning. Matt Gorski got more time at first base, where he’s started in four of his last six games. He committed an error, which was his first at the position all season.

STATCAST HEROES

The hardest contact of the night for Indianapolis came from Liover Peguero, who grounded into a double play on a 103.4 MPH exit velo. Daulton Jefferies was added recently in a trade for depth. He sat around 92 MPH with his fastball, getting three whiffs on five swings against his slider.

DOUBLE-A: ALTOONA CURVE

ALTOONA won 8-3

  • RHP Thomas Harrington: 4.2 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
  • RHP Eddy Yean: 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
  • 1B Seth Beer: 2-for-4, HR, 3 RBI
  • C Carter Bins: 2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI
  • LF Connor Scott: 2-for-5, RBI

Thomas Harrington allowed his first runs at the Double-A level, giving up a run in the second and two more in the fourth inning. He’s still building up his innings after a Spring Training injury, pitching into the fifth for the first time this season. Seth Beer hit his second homer in the last three games, with his third multi-hit game in his last five. Carter Bins homered for the second game in a row.

HIGH-A: GREENSBORO GRASSHOPPERS

GREENSBORO won 5-0, led by Patrick Reilly.

  • DH Nick Cimillo: 2-for-4, HR, SB
  • SS Termarr Johnson: 1-for-3, BB, 2 SB
  • 1B Maikol Escotto: 1-for-4, HR, RBI
  • C Shawn Ross: 1-for-2, HR, BB, 2 RBI, SB
  • RHP Ryan Harbin: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K

Nick Cimillo hit his fifth homer of the year, and third in his last four games. He’s a bat-first prospect who can play behind the plate. Cimillo is in his second season at High-A, after being drafted out of Rutgers in the 16th round in 2022. He was promoted to Greensboro last season for 68 at-bats, and hit three homers in that span, but only a .550 OPS. This year he’s batting .328/.391/.607 in 61 at-bats. Right now he’s a candidate for more playing time, but if he continues hitting, he could move up to Altoona by the end of the year.

SINGLE-A: BRADENTON MARAUDERS

BRADENTON won 4-3

  • LHP Michael Kennedy: 6.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, 2 HR
  • CF Shalin Polanco: 2-for-4, HR, RBI
  • 1B Esmerlyn Valdez: 1-for-4, HR, 3 RBI
  • 2B Keiner Delgado: 1-for-4, SB
  • C Omar Alfonzo: 2-for-4

Bradenton won with late offense, scoring all four runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Shalin Polanco hit his fourth homer of the year as a solo shot in the seventh. Esmerlyn Valdez hit his fifth of the year, a three run shot, in the eighth. Prior to that, Michael Kennedy allowed all of his runs on two separate home runs, but didn’t issue a walk. This is the fifth time in eight starts that Kennedy has pitched 5+ innings with zero walks. He’s recorded a strikeout per inning in four of those starts.

STATCAST HEROES

Omar Alfonzo had singles of 108.5 MPH and 105.4 MPH, along with a groundout at 105.2 MPH. He remains one of the hardest hitters in Bradenton. Shalin Polanco’s home run was 99.7 MPH, and he had a 106.5 MPH single. Kennedy picked up 20 whiffs, with ten on the fastball (42%), seven on the slider (58%), and three on the changeup (23%).

ROOKIE: FCL PIRATES

FCL PIRATES won 7-4

  • SS Jhonny Severino: 1-for-3, HR, 2 RBI
  • C Ramon Ramirez: 1-for-4, HR, RBI
  • 1B Carlos Tirado: 1-for-3, 2B, BB
  • RHP David Matoma: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
  • RHP Alexis Torres: 3.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 5 K, 1 HR

Jhonny Severino hit his fourth homer of the season. The infielder has a .356/.434/.756 line this season, with his biggest drawback being 16 strikeouts in 53 plate appearances (30.2%). The Pirates added Severino in last summer’s Carlos Santana trade. Hard-throwing right-hander David Matoma went two innings for the third time in his career. In nine innings this year, he’s allowed one run on seven hits, with 14 strikeouts and four walks.
