Pirates Prospect Watch: Matt Gorski Has Four Home Runs in His Last Three Games

Published:

Pittsburgh Pirates outfield prospect Matt Gorski is on a hitting tear. Gorski has hit five home runs since May 16th, including hitting two in a massive 18-6 win for the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians on Tuesday night.

Gorski went 3-for-6, knocking in five runs on his two homer night. This is the third game in a row that he’s hit a home run. He’s been hitting well during the month of May, batting .313/.352/.750, with the five home runs.

On the season, Gorski is batting .278/.310/.574. He has plus power, but has dealt with strikeout issues, limiting his ability to get on base. Gorski also plays outfield well, being able to handle all three spots, with above-average defense in center. If he continues hitting like he has been this month, he could be an option for the Pirates this year.

TRIPLE-A: INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS

INDIANAPOLIS won 18-6.

  • C Henry Davis: 2-for-4, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB
  • 3B Malcom Nunez: 2-for-3, HR, 2 RBI, 3 BB
  • SS Liover Peguero: 2-for-3, 2 BB, 2 RBI
  • RHP Quinn Priester: 4.0 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, 1 HR
  • 2B Andres Alvarez: 2-for-5, 2B, BB

It was a big night for Indianapolis, with Gorski, Henry Davis, and Malcom Nunez hitting four homers in the 18-run victory. Quinn Priester had some struggles in his return to Triple-A. With Yasmani Grandal injured, and Davis starting to hit for power in Triple-A, the Pirates could give their 2021 first overall pick another shot in the majors.

STATCAST HEROES

The biggest Indianapolis hit of the night belonged to Davis, whose home run distance was unreported. The homer traveled at 105.7 MPH.

Priester picked up nine whiffs, with three on eight swings against the slider, and four on nine swings against the curveball.

DOUBLE-A: ALTOONA CURVE

ALTOONA lost 11-1.

  • RHP Po-Yu Chen: 4.0 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 HR
  • RHP Valentin Linarez: 3.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 1 HR
  • SS Tsung-Che Cheng: 1-for-4
  • 3B Kervin Pichardo: 1-for-2, BB
  • 2B Francisco Acuna: 1-for-3, 2B, RBI

Altoona was shut down on both sides of the ball, with Po-Yu Chen getting hit around to set the tone of the game. The standout performer was hard-throwing reliever Valentin Linarez, who held Erie to one run in three innings, while striking out four.

HIGH-A: GREENSBORO GRASSHOPPERS

GREENSBORO lost 15-2.

  • SS Termarr Johnson: 1-for-4, 2B
  • DH Jack Brannigan: 0-for-2, BB, 2 SB
  • 3B Charles McAdoo: 0-for-2, 2 BB, 2 SB
  • CF P.J. Hilson: 1-for-2, BB
  • LHP Luis Peralta: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K

Another blow out loss for the lower level teams. Greensboro didn’t have many standout performers on Tuesday. Termarr Johnson continued hitting for extra-bases with a double. The 2022 fourth overall pick has three doubles and a home run in his last three games.

SINGLE-A: BRADENTON MARAUDERS

BRADENTON lost 6-4.

  • CF Sergio Campana: 2-for-4, 2B, HR, RBI
  • PH-RF Braylon Bishop: 1-for-4, HR, RBI
  • SS Keiner Delgado: 2-for-5, RBI
  • 2B Kalae Harrison: 2-for-4, 2 SB
  • LF Eddy Rodriguez: 1-for-4, BB, SB

Bradenton got home runs from Sergio Campana and Braylon Bishop, with Bishop continuing a hot streak over the last few games. Bishop is 5-for-10 with a double, triple, and home run during his last three games.

STATCAST HEROES

The home run from Campana traveled 451 feet at 100.8 MPH. RHP Ryan Harbin pitched a scoreless inning of relief, striking out three. He had three whiffs on three swings against his slider, with a fastball that averaged 96.5 MPH and touched 97.9.

ROOKIE: FCL PIRATES

FCL PIRATES won 9-3.

  • 3B Jhonny Severino: 2-for-5, 2 HR, 3 RBI
  • SS Yerry De Los Santos: 3-for-5, 2B, RBI
  • 1B Luke Scherrer: 3-for-4, 2B, RBI
  • DH Enmanuel Terrero: 3-for-4, 3 SB
  • RHP Scott Randall: 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

Jhonny Severino, acquired in the Carlos Santana trade last summer, hit two homers on Tuesday. The infielder has an eight-game hitting streak, with three homers, four doubles, and a triple. Scott Randall was acquired in the Diego Castillo trade prior to the 2023 season. He missed the 2023 season with Tommy John. 20-year-old LHP Inmer Lobo allowed one run in one inning. The Pirates got Lobo for Hoy Park. That makes Randall and Lobo the extended return for Clay Holmes
