Pirates Prospect Watch: Lonnie White’s Grand Slam Leads Greensboro to 15 Runs

The Greensboro Grasshoppers have been known to put up some big scoring nights. On Thursday, the Pirates’ High-A affiliate combined for 15 runs on 18 hits, leading to a 15-2 victory.

Lonnie White Jr. led the scoring off with a grand slam in the first inning, putting Greensboro up 4-0 before they had thrown a pitch.

A second inning solo shot from outfielder Luke Brown, and a third inning homer from Nick Cimillo extended the lead to 6-0. Brown broke the game open with a two-out grand slam of his own in the third, putting Greensboro up 10-0.

White, Cimillo, and Brown combined for eight hits, with four of those being home runs that led to ten runs on the day. Cimillo went 3-for-5 with a walk. White added two more RBIs on his second hit of the day, giving him six total. Brown went 3-for-5 with five RBIs on his two homers.

TRIPLE-A: INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS

INDIANAPOLIS lost game one 3-2

Jack Suwinski hit his first homer since being sent down to Triple-A. It was a leadoff shot to start the game. Henry Davis hit his seventh double in Triple-A. Daulton Jefferies, who was the 27th man for Wednesday’s MLB double header, was the starter for Indianapolis on Thursday. He allowed two runs in four innings, with three walks and two strikeouts.

STATCAST HEROES

Jack Suwinski’s home run was hit 434 feet at 109.2 MPH. The double from Davis was hit 107.7 MPH. Connor Sadzeck averaged 96.3 MPH with his fastball, touching 97.2.

INDIANAPOLIS lost game two 7-1

Indianapolis had five hits and three walks in the second game, with 11 strikeouts. The pitching allowed seven runs in 4.1 innings, before Ryder Ryan stopped the scoring for the remainder of the game.

STATCAST HEROES

The single from Mike Jarvia was hit at 102.2 MPH. He also had a 109 MPH exit velo that resulted in a fielding error. Isaac Mattson allowed two runs in two innings, but picked up ten whiffs, including five on seven swings against his slider.

DOUBLE-A: ALTOONA CURVE

ALTOONA won 6-5

  • RF Sammy Siani: 2-for-4, 2 RBI

Thomas Harrington now has a 2.70 ERA in 16.2 innings through his first four outings with Altoona. He’s struck out 17 and walked one. Sammy Siani has reached base safely for seven straight games. In that span he’s 9-for-24 with two doubles, a homer, and four walks.

HIGH-A: GREENSBORO GRASSHOPPERS

GREENSBORO won 15-2, led by the grand slams from White, Brown, and the homer from Cimillo. They weren’t the only ones hitting.

Cimillo has hit five home runs since May 19th. Barco’s ERA rose to 2.55 after this outing. In 42.1 innings this year, he has 51 strikeouts and a 1.06 WHIP. Luis Peralta has an 0.43 ERA in 21 innings, with 41 strikeouts.

SINGLE-A: BRADENTON MARAUDERS

BRADENTON was postponed.

ROOKIE: FCL PIRATES

FCL PIRATES lost 6-4

  • LF Miguel Sosa: 3-for-3, 2 2B, BB
  • 2B Carlos Caro: 2-for-3, RBI
  • RHP David Matoma: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
  • 3B Yerry De Los Santos: 1-for-4

This was a rare night game, played at LECOM Park. David Matoma closed out the game with 1.2 shutout innings. This was his fourth appearance with multiple innings. The hard-throwing 18-year-old has an 0.84 ERA in 10.2 innings this year, with an 18:4 K/BB ratio.
