Pirates Sign Non-Drafted Catcher Luke Scherrer

The Pittsburgh Pirates signed non-drafted free agent Luke Scherrer to a deal today, the team has announced. Scherrer is an 18-year-old catcher signed out of Yucaipa High School in California. He previously had a commitment to play at Cal Poly, before signing with the Pirates.

Scouting Report

Scherrer batted .350 with 16 doubles, one homer, and 20 RBIs in his senior year. He hit .450 with three homers his junior year. He’s got a good arm behind the plate, with his 1.80 pop time ranking first at the 2022 Perfect Game showcase. Prep Baseball Report rated him 56th in the nation in 2022. He is a big framed catcher who has shown an ability to hit at the prep level. The Pirates are sending him to the Florida Complex League to begin his career.
