Pirates Prospects Daily: Bubba Chandler Looking To Limit Big Innings

Published:

Bubba Chandler is one of the most promising arms in the Pirates system, and you could maybe make the argument he has the highest ceiling in the system.

This year is the first time he’s focused solely on pitching, and he’s doing it in a hitter-friendly league at High-A, all the while doing it as a 20-year-old.

There were always going to be struggles, and here we are with Chandler having a more than ideal bloated ERA, with over 30 walks in 46.2 innings this season.

We’ve seen flashes, including his most recent outing on Tuesday, seeing him strikeout eight in five innings, allowing just one run and one walk while surrendering six hits overall. According to the Greenville broadcast, he threw multiple pitches at 99 MPH, which is a little more like what we saw last year from him.

One of the keys for him as the season progresses, along with better control, is limiting the big innings. It’s something he’ll learn with more experience on the mound, and what can allow him to reach his upside — is how get out of those potential big innings with limited damage done.

After his start on Tuesday, Chandler has thrown 46.2 innings this season, allowing 36 total runs (earned and unearned). Among those innings, 10 of those he has allowed multiple runs — five with two, two with three, and three with four.

In total, 28-of-the-36 runs he’s allowed this season has come in those 10 innings where he’s allowed multiple opponents to score. That’s eight runs allowed in his other 36.2 innings pitched.

That’s something you can work with, and something to build off of.

You can see him get visibly frustrated on the mound when he starts to miss with his pitches more and more, sometimes leading to the big blow up of an inning.

Learning the mental side of the game is something that will come, and when it does, it should be easier to see that upside that so many national outlets talk about.

Prospect Notes

–The Pirates love their versatile infielders, and they got another brewing in Bradenton when it comes to Jack Brannigan. He played his first professional game at shortstop on Tuesday, picking up an assist on the first play of the game.

Brannigan has a cannon of an arm, and got high marks for his overall defensive work, so it probably shouldn’t have been much of a surprise to see him get into game action at shortstop.

When we originally talked about Brannigan, this isn’t exactly what we thought, but it’s working just as good.
