Pirates Promote Jared Jones to Indianapolis

Published:

Pirates Prospects has learned that the Pittsburgh Pirates have promoted right-handed pitching prospect Jared Jones to Triple-A Indianapolis.

The 21-year-old Jones has been pitching this season at Altoona, where he put up a 2.23 ERA in 44.1 innings, with a 1.08 WHIP, a 47:18 SO/BB ratio and a .201 BAA.

Jones was a second round pick during the 2020 draft. He debuted in pro ball in 2021 with Low-A Bradenton, where he went 3-6, 4.64 in 66 innings over 15 starts and three relief appearances, with a 1.47 WHIP and 103 strikeouts, giving him a strikeout rate of 14.0 per nine innings.

He moved up to Greensboro last year, where he had a 4.62 ERA in 122.2 innings over 26 starts, finishing with 1.35 WHIP and 142 strikeouts.

Jones was recently ranked as the fifth best prospect in the Pirates system. He’s one spot behind Luis Ortiz, who needs just 1.1 more innings before he loses his prospect status.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
