The Pirates are in first place in the NL Central, up by half a game over the Milwaukee Brewers. They have a +11 run differential, which ranks first in the division. In that regard, Milwaukee (2nd place, -21) and Cincinnati (3rd, -33) seem to be over-performing compared to Chicago (4th, +1) and St. Louis (5th, +2). In any event, this is a division in which the Pirates can contend the rest of the season.
Tonight’s starter is Mitch Keller, who is making his way up the pitcher leaderboards. Keller ranks 11th among qualified MLB pitchers with a 2.0 WAR this year. He ranks 23rd in ERA (3.25) and 10th in FIP (2.85). He’s allowed ten earned runs in 12 innings over his last two outings. The Pirates offense combined for 20 runs in those games, bailing their best starter out. Tonight, they go up against a starter with an ERA north of 8, so Keller should have some support in what could be a nice bounce-back outing.

PIRATES RECAP
By Jeff Reed
Final Score: A’s 11, Pirates 2
Player of the Game: Bryan Reynolds 1-for-2, 2 BB
Recap:
Neither Mitch Keller nor the Pittsburgh Pirates hitters brought their A game on Tuesday evening.
Much in the same way Oakland Athletics starter JP Sears did on Monday, game two’s starter James Kaprielian filled the bases, but managed to make it through mostly unscathed.
Keller battled most of the evening, and through five innings, the Pirates were knotted up at two all. A couple timely double play balls kept things at bay, but the Athletics finally broke through big in the sixth.
Oakland had two runners on with one out when Jace Peterson hit a RBI single to right field for a 3-2 lead. That knocked Keller out of the game. Reliever Yohan Ramirez entered the game with two on and one out. He proceeded to let the first three batters all reach, Esteury Ruiz by way of a fielder’s choice throwing error from Conner Joe, driving in both inherited runners for an Oakland 5-2 lead.
The final stat line for Keller ended with 5.1 IP, eight hits, five earned runs, four walks, and only one strike out.
As mentioned, Kaprielian was allowing runners, mostly by way of walking batters. Bryan Reynolds and Andrew McCutchen both walked with one out in the second inning, but the next two batters were sat down. They combined once again in the fifth for two runners on and no outs, but the Pirates offense was only able to push across one run – the equalizing second run at the time – on a Josh Palacios groundout. That was after Joe had loaded the bases with a one-out walk.
Rule 5 selection Jose Hernandez pitched a clean seventh inning on only 11 pitches, striking out one batter.
Things quickly unraveled in the eighth inning. Chase De Jong made his return, and gave up four runs from two two-run home runs by Peterson and Brent Rooker.
Joe and Palacios lead off the bottom half of the eighth with singles, but the Pirates offense faltered with a ground out and ground ball double play. In total, the offense would finish the evening 0-for-13 with RISP.
De Jong served up another two-run home run to the evening’s Pirates killer, Jace Peterson, for the concluding score of 11-2.
Pirates six-game winning streak ends, with Roansy Contreras set to take the mound for Wednesday’s finale and deciding game. First pitch will be at 12:35 PM.
PIRATES PROSPECT WATCH
By John Dreker
TRIPLE-A: INDIANAPOLIS
Final Score: Omaha 4, Indianapolis 2
Player of the Game: Cam Alldred 5 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO
Recap:
Henry Davis made his Triple-A debut on Tuesday night, catching and batting fifth in the lineup. He had a somewhat quiet day, as Indianapolis lost 4-2. Davis went 0-for-2 with a walk and a sacrifice hit. The opposition went 5-for-6 in stolen bases.
Nick Gonzales and Endy Rodriguez each went 1-for-4 with a single and a walk.
Miguel Andujar and Ryan Vilade each had two hits. Vilade’s triple was the only extra-base hit for the Indians.
Cam Alldred had a strong start, allowing one run over five innings on three hits and no walks. He needed just 51 pitches to get through his day.
John O’Reilly threw a scoreless sixth. Hunter Stratton allowed a run in his two innings. Yerry De Los Santos took the loss with two runs in the ninth.
DOUBLE-A: ALTOONA
Final Score: Altoona 6, Richmond 4
Player of the Game: Matt Gorski 2-for-4, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI
Recap:
Starter Kyle Nicolas was knocked out after just three innings, but Altoona still won 6-4 over Richmond. Nicolas allowed three runs on five hits and two walks, while throwing 73 pitches in his abbreviated time.
Travis MacGregor saved the day in relief, with three perfect shutout innings, striking out five of those nine batters. Cameron Junker allowed a seventh inning run, then Tyler Samaniego and Oliver Garcia finished off the game with shutout innings.
Matt Gorski pulled off his third straight Player of the Game honor by collecting his eighth double and first triple, leading to two runs and two RBIs.
Liover Peguero, Matt Fraizer, Drew Maggi and Andres Alvarez each had two hits. Fraizer hit his tenth double. Peguero hit his 13th double.
Abrahan Gutierrez went 0-for-3 with a walk in his Double-A debut.
HIGH-A: GREENSBORO
Final Score: Greensboro 2, Wilmington 1
Player of the Game: Anthony Solometo 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO
Recap:
Anthony Solometo had a strong game on Tuesday night, allowing one unearned run over six innings, with five hits, one walk and four strikeouts. He now has a 2.47 ERA, 61 strikeouts and a 1.13 WHIP over 54.2 innings.
The bullpen was equally impressive, as Santiago Florez, Mitchell Miller and Cy Nielson combined to allow no hits and one walk over the final three scoreless innings.
Obviously there wasn’t much offense in a game with three runs. Tsung-Che Cheng had Greensboro’s only extra-base hit, his ninth double. Tres Gonzalez had two hits and a run.
All three runs in the game scored on outs. Will Matthiessen and Sammy Siani each had a sacrifice fly.
SINGLE-A: BRADENTON
Final Score: Bradenton 10, Dunedin 3
Player of the Game: Jack Brannigan 3-for-5, 2B, 2 HR, 6 RBI
Recap:
Jack Brannigan had a career night on Tuesday in Bradenton’s 10-6 win. He homered twice, doubled, scored three runs and drove in six. He had just one homer and one double coming into the day.
Enmanuel Terrero had a nice day as well, with three hits and three runs. He collected his fourth triple.
Rodolfo Nolasco hit his fifth homer and drove in three runs. Termarr Johnson didn’t have any hits, but he did just fine anyway by walking four times.
Deivis Nadal stole his 13th base. Jesus Castillo had two steals, giving him 11 on the season.
Javier Rivas went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts and a walk. Shalin Polanco went 1-for-5 with a single and three strikeouts.
Owen Kellington worked hard to get through three innings on two runs allowed. He tossed 62 pitches in his brief time. He has a 4.18 ERA, 41 strikeouts an a 1.48 WHIP over 32.1 innings. Owen Sharts allowed a run over two frames, while picking up the win.
Brandan Bidois, Darvin Garcia and Carlos Lomeli combined for four shutout innings on one hit, no walks and five strikeouts.
ROOKIE: FCL PIRATES
Final Score: Braves 7, Pirates 6
Player of the Game: Jauri Custodio 2-for-3, 2B, RBI, 2 BB
Recap:
The Pirates lost 7-6 to the Braves on Tuesday. Geronimo Franzua got the start on rehab in his first appearance with the Pirates since signing a minor league deal in the off-season. He threw a scoreless inning.
It was an ugly bullpen game from there, with four relievers combined to allow seven runs on 11 hits, seven walks, three errors and a hit batter.
Jauri Custodio had the big game on the offensive side, with a single, double, two walks, a run scored and an RBI.
Yordany De Los Santos went 0-for-5 with an error. Lonnie White Jr went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts and a walk.
The Pirates scored two in the first on an Axiel Plaz sacrifice fly and a wild pitch. Rehabbing Jack Herman drove in a pair in the second with a double.
Bases loaded walks to Jhonson Pena and Custodio brought in the final two runs in the fourth. The Pirates were leading 6-4 at the time. Plaz and White Jr struck out with the bases loaded in that fourth inning to keep the Pirates from adding much needed insurance runs.
The Pirates loaded the bases in the sixth on three walks to start the frame, but White Jr, De Los Santos and Omar Alfonzo couldn’t get a run home. The Pirates had a total of 12 runners on base after their final run, so they really let this game get away from them.
ROOKIE: DSL PIRATES BLACK
Final Score: Tigers 3, Pirates 2
Player of the Game: July Vittini 1-for-3, HR, 2 RBI, BB
Recap:
The Pirates Black mounted a late comeback, but fell short to drop to 0-2 in a 3-2 loss to the Tigers. July Vittini hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth. They then loaded the bases with no outs on a double by Angel Perez, a walk to Alex Aquino and a fielder’s choice with Christopher Orelin up. That was followed by a strikeout, pop out and fly out to end the game.
The Pirates had two singles prior to the ninth inning. Aquino and Vittini each reached base twice with a hit and a walk. No one else reached more than once.
Cuban signing Cristian Jauregui had a rough debut yesterday going 0-for-5 with three strikeouts. It didn’t get any better today, as he went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts. Angel Rodriguez also went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts, though he added a walk.
Starter Carlos Castillo allowed one run over 2.2 innings, with three hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Dariel Francia allowed two runs over 3.1 innings in his pro debut, though he picked up four strikeouts.
Yoerys Hernandez threw two scoreless. Janderson Linares debuted with three strikeouts in his only inning.
ROOKIE: DSL PIRATES GOLD
Final Score: Pirates 7, Tigers 3
Player of the Game: Gustavo Armas 4-for-5, 3B, 2 RBI, SB
Recap:
The Pirates Gold moved to 2-0 win a 7-3 victory on Tuesday. Starter Alexis Torres went 2.1 innings, allowing an unearned run on three hits, two walks and four strikeouts. He was followed by 3.2 scoreless from Hader Blanco. Jesus Clode finished off the win with two runs over three innings, one of those runs being earned.
Five errors in the game contributed to those two unearned runs.
Gustavo Armas had a big game, collecting four hits, including a triple. He scored one run and drove in a pair, while picking up his first steal.
The Pirates scored six runs in the second inning. Fabian Urbina started it with an RBI single. Armas drove in a pair with a single. Juan Machado had an RBI single next, then Ruben Vizcaya had an RBI ground out.
A wild pitch in the ninth scored Urbina with an insurance run.
Machado and Urbina each had two hits. Carlos Tirado had a single and two walks.
I know he’s really, really young, but Solometo is just not being challenged in a hitter friendly league & park. Come July if it’s still the same, they have to move him up
Did they actually make Hank Davis sac bunt? lol
This loss will need some context. If they lose today it goes down as horrible, if they win today, it is “just one of those games”.
Yes, that’s the key. Have they reached the point where they shake off a game like last night’s off or do they let it linger? The 1-26 with RISP concerns me that they’re back in a hitting slump after only recently seemingly getting out of the nearly month-long slump.
When it comes down to it,the Pirates lineup still stinks and they have a few guys who shouldnt be on a major league roster. It needs an infusion of power.

Didn’t get to see the game. Was Mitch’s command for shit again?
Yep, you picked a good one to miss. He battled through five but the wheels came off in the 6th. DeJong had a stellar 8th and 9th giving up 6 on three 2 run homeruns.
DeJong is the bullpen version of Owings.
Very forgettable effort. Checked the transaction sheet to see if they DFA’d DeJong immediately after the game, but I guess that will occur this morning. I guess that 1.74 ERA in AAA was smoke and mirrors.
Keller has hit an extended bump in the road, but almost managed to throw enough GB’s to get through it – double plays in the 3rd and 4th kept it close.
Embarrassing! That’s all I have to say about this disaster.
Makes today’s game all the more interesting to see how they rebound from such an ugly game. I’m worried it will take the off-day tomorrow before they reset, especially given Contreras’s recent struggles.
It’s pretty easy to make a mountain out of a molehill if they lose two of three to Oakland. The Dodgers got swept at home by Pittsburgh last year. Did their season crumble because of it?
Just a temporary mountain 😉 The Braves lost 2 of 3 to the A’s, though in Oakland, and I was reminded of last year’s Dodgers’ series as well. So I agree with you, but for me the issue wouldn’t be losing 2 of 3 to a historically bad team but instead that it’s another data point as to the quality of this team, one that would offset the optimism I felt after sweeping the Cardinals.
Temporary mountain…a hill? Ridge maybe? No one likes to lose to historically bad teams. It’s nice to be on the other side of that feeling, isn’t it? If both teams sucked, we probably wouldn’t care as much.
Never thought i would be pining for DUJ.
Chase just had the look, this might be the last time I walk off a major league mound.
I remember last season, someone on reddit argued with me that de jong should be getting cy young votes. I wonder if they still think so
Cy O’Nara votes.
A loss is a loss, but this will be the A’s biggest margin of victory this season.
On a positive note, the O’s just took the lead against the Brewers and the Cardinals and Reds are also losing .
The Reds are a team to watch—lots of exciting young talent, especially with de la Cruz being up now.
Scooped up de la Cruz in fantasy. Also have Steer. Agree with your comment on the exciting young talent.
Cindy scored 3 in the 9th to win 9-8. They have hitters and pitchers, but young. They’re going to be very good in 2-3 years.
Sorry, it’s cincy.
Cincy better spell checker and having essential tremors I’m having a very hard time posting.
The pitching has been impressive too, seems like a better rebuild than ours….seems.
Yes, they were in the playoffs in ’20 and I think they’ll be back in contention by next year after being as bad as we were in ’22. We had to endure three miserable years while they endured one before becoming interesting again.
They look to be better at development and in their trade returns.
It’s fair to say Ben missed on the Marte trade. Peguero is still interesting but is looking less and less like an impact player. The Musgrove trade seems okay but largely depends on Endy reaching his projections–Bednar is great, but you need to get more than a closer for a starter like Musgrove. The Taillon trade is looking more meh as Ro continues to struggle and the Bell trade was worthless.
Like with Huntington, Ben’s best trades may not be the ones where stars are traded–the returns for Vogelbach, Newman, and Frazier are looking good.
Also I think the Reds had a lot more to work with to flip to begin with, so I’m not being very fair. Marte/JT/Musgrove aren’t really as good a combo as Castillo/Winker/Suarez/Gray to start with. Still, if we’re just looking at prospects the Reds have drafted and developed, it looks like they’re a bit ahead. That can all change though.
It’s better to lose one to the A’s than to lose one to the Cardinals.
If I was an A’s fan, I’d be impressed with the game Peterson has had after the ugly error in the 1st.
In general, the A’s look like they came to play. With the way Ro has been struggling, I don’t expect us to win the series—tomorrow’s game feels 50-50.
We certainly have not come to play in either game, won the first by dumb luck. Hoping someone lights a fire under their asses after tonights performance
They need to take to heart what Cutch said last night—it’s only June and they still have a lot to prove. After May and the past three years, I’d hate to think they’d take any team lightly but that’s the way it’s appeared the last two nights.
It’s the A’s, we still have a chance lol
The A’s are saying, “It’s the Pirates! We have a chance to win the series!”
Dammit Rudy, you were supposed to hit a 3 run homer there.
It’s just part of Shelton’s plan to get Bednar a couple days rest after 3 in a row.
Wait? DeJong still sucks?
Only when he’s pitching, stand-up individual any other time.
Good point!
We’re doing our best to get everyone in the A’s lineup above the Mendoza line tonight.
Good to have DeJong back said no one ever.
Keller is tonight
And Peterson…..
lol nice work chase
Draft Skenes!
Preach it!!!
Getting ready to file this game away in the “Most disappointing losses of the season” file.
Kaprelian’s fastball is almost the textbook definition of average. It plays up because his slider and curve are both about 12 mph’s slower. He’s pitched everyone all game by using the fastball as a way to keep batters off the breaking pitches. That at bat Hedges had in the 6th Kaprelian attacked him with the fastball and when Hedges caught up to it and fouled one off he went to breaking balls. That’s all I ever need to know about Hedges as a batter.
#ExtendKellr?
So that’s three poor starts in a row from Mitch?
He wasn’t throwing strikes today. Missed with the fastball high and arm side to righties and low and/or in to lefties. Any pitches trying to get chases weren’t close enough for anyone to chase. Very few swings and misses in part due to pitches when batters swung were in counts when he had to be in the zone. Several loud outs too.
To be fair though I blame all the inherited runs in the 6th on Connor Joe. Yohan got three straight grounders and the first two should have been the second, third and four out of the inning instead of two runs.
That’s a bit harsh. The last two were mediocre but not poor. He was striking guys out in both previous games, but got hit some. Tonight was poor.
Nevertheless where is the offense is my question…
Fair on the offense. But I think 10 earned in 12 innings even with some Ks isn’t anything great.
Yup. Sure hasn’t looked like an ace lately.
I’m not sure he’s an ace, but he’s still worth an extension. Could be just a blip. I’ve missed his last few starts so i haven’t been able to see. Is it command? Velocity ok?
Velo is fine, command was bad today for sure
Yep, he was either off the plate or in the middle of it.
Yeah, but in the previous two he went 6 innings with 8Ks in both.
And gave up 10 runs, 17 hits. In a total of 12 innings. Not sure I’d call that mediocre.
That was an ugly inning.
Is Prospect Watch not getting its own column anymore? That’s one of the only things I read on the site, and I really don’t want to have to go searching for it.
This is the prospect watch devil dog. They combine it.
It’s not labeled as such. It’s just something added in a different article. I haven’t seen a Prospects Watch since May 21st, so I’ve missed a lot.
Dumb move in my opinion.
Whats our projection for cy nielson? Seems like hes holding down greensoboro’s closing role very nicely
ha… ha…
Let’s get Mr. Rule 5 in there already, eh?
0 for 11 with RISP. FFS…..
And not any hard outs even, unless I’ve forgotten one.
We need a clutch hit here in the worst way
with all of his Toronto connections, I really hope BC finds a way to acquire Alex Manoah
Would definitely be buying low on him right now with all of the world of ceiling to go
Conner Joe > Daulton Varsho and Rich Hill > 2023 Manoah
get it done
Mitch is looking better this inning.
Hoping we end up with the better SS unicorn over the next several years with cruz over the Reds’ de la cruz
They moved him to 3b, but your point remains!
I think the lede there is that the Reds think today is safe for bringing up a star prospect.
Barring injury, I can´t see how either of Hedges nor Delay get an inning of work when wEndy and Tank arrive
I wonder if Hedges accepts role of coach instead of being on the 26 man roster?
Would certainly take him as a catching coach for endy and tank. Offer him another 5mil to stay on next year in that role?
could always leave the option open to join the roster if an injury were to occur
I am surprised this type of deal does not happen more often with older catchers
Keller leaving a lot middle up or middle middle today per lameday
Has 0 K and 9 baserunners through 4
His command is a bit off, still battling though. Old Mitch would have given up 4 or 5 and been out of the game.
That’s a positive spin considering he’s facing an AAA team.
He still gave up the 5, just took him longer than the Old Mitch.
Solo with another very strong outing, hes already surpassed his innings limit from last year so will be interesting to see how far he gets this year. Probably ~100 would be a reasonable guess, hopefully at least a few starts at toona
They might get aggressive and get him up to Altoona if or when Jones or Sullivan get moved up.
So, is old Keller back? I’m only seeing Gameday so don’t have a handle on how he actually is looking.
Command is off but he’s battling.
FG had an article about what extensions for Keller and Cruz might look like, and the estimate for Keller made me skeptical as to whether we’d commit that much to a pitcher. Maybe a few rough outings would make an extension more likely.
Yeah the 6/116 is definitely steep for what I would be comfortable with for sure
Any Keller extension will almost certainly be below Reynolds’ in both total contract value and AAV.
At that price, I’d almost consider a trade, almost.
Yea, because 19 million a year is such a crazy price to pay for a top of the rotation arm.
Just don’t think Nutting has it in him to go that high and I would want him pitching longer for us. We’ve had good ones before Cole and Musgrove, just wondering how long a trade would go.
Mitch has history that isn’t very good. He’s been good for about one year. Exerting caution would be wise. When this was brought up yesterday I suggested buying out only one year of FA, so 4/72-ish, with a 5th year option at $20M. He’d be 32 then. If he continues to perform like an ace and stays healthy, you can always do another extension for more.
It doesn’t have to be for that total, but it’s going to cost something. A deal obviously won’t be getting done any time soon. Maybe in the offseason if Mitch has pitched well again a deal can get worked out. That’s enough time to give an extension. The pirates have to take some risk because they aren’t giving a pitcher a 7 year 230 million dollar deal.
Is it me or is Castro’s turn consistently slow and ugly?
You on that one, he was coming off the bag right after the ball got to him and made a strong throw. Not overly fast on the transition but he received it on his left side shoulder.
Needed that, good turn by Castro.
Gutierrez DHing in Altoona. Mitch not looking sharp at all.
Well this isn’t going according to plan.
We need keller much more dialed in than this
Batting practice Mitch today.
I think that the A’s announcers know more about the Pirates than our own announcers….
According to the A’s announcers Choi took batting practice today.
When did we signed Jace Peterson? He’s been quite productive for us in the last two games……
I thought it was going out, I like Marcano’s approach.
I’m a fan of this guy, hope he keeps the line drive approach.
Mitch get the ball in the zone.
I’ve heard the MLBTV app allows you to watch affiliates of your favorite team for free. Anyone know how or if this is accurate?
Yes it is, main difference than the milb app is that you can’t rewind and there’s no archive. But no extra cost!
It’s there on the tv app for sure. I can’t find it anywhere on the iPhone app. Haven’t tried the MiLB app, mainly because I watch it on tv.
Under the watch icon on apple.
Yes, that is accurate.
Let’s hope Mitch comes out focused and firing on all cylinders. His last two starts have been less than stellar.
Certainly encouraged by the comeback wins during this win streak, but expecting that to continue is foolish thinking. Tonight I want to see the Pirates, led by Keller, step on the A’s throats and keep it there all night long.
