The Pittsburgh Pirates (21-16) are taking on the Colorado Rockies (15-22) on Wednesday afternoon in the finale of a three-game series. First pitch will be at 12:35 PM.
Rich Hill (3-3, 4.54) will be on the mound today against Antonio Senzatela (0-1, 1.80), who is making his second start of the season.
The Pirates have an off-day tomorrow, followed by a three-game series in Baltimore against the Orioles.
On the minor league side, both Altoona and Greensboro have 11 AM start times. More on the Altoona game just below.
The Pirates gave some medical updates to the media today. Nothing unknown really, but news here on Vince Velasquez, Wil Crowe and Blake Cederlind
Updates from Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk:
Velasquez will throw live BP early next week. Optimistic he’ll miss the minimum.
Crowe had PRP injection 2 weeks ago. He’s halfway through 4 weeks of not throwing.
Cederlind to start rehab work tonight or tomorrow.

Here’s some news for today, starting with a pitching prospect making his return to the mound.
**Jared Jones is back with Altoona and starting today. Check back on that link later as well, as any minor league moves from today will be added there.
**The schedules have been released for the Florida Complex League and Dominican Summer League. Less than a month before they get into action.
**Last night’s Prospect Watch, headlined by the big day from Henry Davis.
**Pirates lost last night with two new players in the lineup, and it wasn’t pretty.
UMPIRE SCORECARD
Did MLB put out a memo to do a better job in the Pirates games? This is three straight excellent performances behind the plate. Just four misses and all were close to the zone.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball.
When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
My god, run to the ball. Starting your slide inside the foul line is gutless
I’m done watching the Pirates this season until they bring up some of the young guys. This team is not good and completely overachieved in the month of April. They now look exactly as the team I predicted them to be. I only expected 74 wins. I bought into the elation of winning and was fooled there for a moment, but now I’m back to reality and sad. It’s just tough to take this when you still remain a passionate fan of a very bad franchise in professional sports.
we are in 1st place
Yeah it’s like being the tallest midget.
Another great performance by the Can’t Hit your way outta Wet Paper Bag Gang or just CHYWPBG whatever…
I still do not understand why Endy is not the backup to either Hedges or Delay or why the Pirates keep signing catchers that are just pathic with the bat…If the Pirates continue to worry about Super 2 they will never have the prospects up to help the team grow in a team timely frame…His best learning curve is at the major league level working with a major league catcher…
If one believes in framing, or stealing strikes, Pirates are best at it in all MLB at +7. Giants are 2nd at 4 according to FG. Not that that excuses having a guy hitting Ariana Grande’s weight.
I see you haven’t been paying attention to minor league baseball.
What?
It’s quite amazing we still lead this dreadful division.
A team of this quality could’ve been built three years ago, with an on-ramp to being actually good by now that would’ve aligned perfectly win an exceptionally easy Division win.
Rebuilds are the absolute f*cking worst. Just try, that’s it!
We won’t have to worry about that soon enough.
Endy and Davis can’t get here fast enough. I don’t know if they will hit right off of the bat but I want that learning curve to have begun.
Andujar is giving US nothing.
Palacios deserves a couple of weeks here and some starts but he still is not the kind of player to put much hope in.
Get Hayes out of the lead off spot. He needs to earn his way up there. It is tough to pin any particular loss on him, BUT he hits a homer ever 6 weeks which is a quiet penalty every game, despite the great defense.
Delay has earned a spot here and the Pirates are getting rid of Hedges, but we could use another guy that can catch. Once Endy finds his groove, I would add him to the roster because he can play multiple positions. Then promote Henry Davis to triple A.
Andujar is on thin ice, but does have 2 homers in his first 10 games so I’m not ready to dump him yet.
I couldn’t agree more on Hayes not being a lead-off hitter with his .246 avg 5sb 5 cs. If Bae could hit better, he would be the obvious choice. My radical choice would be Bryan Reynolds. He is the best pure hitter and has 5 steals without being thrown out.
meant to say they are not getting rid of Hedges.
Really? I wonder why? Is it the $5 mil they paid for a guy who hasn’t hit .200 in five years?
Thanks for responding. The fact that they gave him a $5 million for a guy that hasn’t hit .200 in 5 years was a head scratcher. So he wasn’t getting paid to hit. My thought was he was getting paid for 3 reasons. 1) Handle the pitching staff. (The first 25 or 30 games we were all happy with the pitching. 2) Throw out runners. ( He has been terrible this year, after being above average at this.) 3) Mentor Endy and Henry whenever once gets the call.
That’s some good managing—Johnson dominates lefties and you bring up a lefty just up from the minors. Delay should have been the choice there.
Ironically, Joe lined out and Andujar struck out, while Castro walked and Bae doubled.
If only mighty Casey (Hedges) could get to bat!
The Pirates are becoming very hard to watch again and you can’t claim these kind of performances on playing top level AL teams. They’re making the Rockies (last place in the NL West) look like contenders. This is just plain awful baseball they’re playing overall but the lack of hitting is absurd.
Our steals and caught stealing this year

Ugh had to walk away after the nobletiger
Too bad Stephenson took four batters to find his groove.
MFBS
lol did anyone see the replay of the DP thru Lameday? The audio is from the Rockies announcers & his voice crack is too funny
I am not watching but read play by play. Unless it is too painful, can somebody describe what happened on the inning ending DP? The description makes it sound like the standard – fly ball and attempted tag and score. It appears it wasn’t that simple from the comments.
Castro hit a line drive/fly ball that looked like it had a chance to drop. The outfielder caught it and threw a perfect strike home to get Reynolds who was tagging from third. It was kind of strange that the catcher was set up blocking the plate. He caught it, then cleared a path for Reynolds and tagged him out. Pirates challenged and lost.
Thank you.
Sigh, figuring out new ways to lose. Actually, based loaded no-outs isn’t a new one, they dusted off an oldie this time. Thanks fellas.
I liked pre-Rays series baseball better
Definition of a hitting slump: bases loaded, no outs, don’t score.
New levels of incompetence every day.
It isn’t you, Wilbur, believe me. It’s not being negative to suggest that Shelton really isn’t a very good manager.
That’s why he is getting an extension, the right man for the right team…
Running the bases has gone from an access to a liability!
Ok Joe, contact swing, not grand slam swing!
That was a nice bunt by Bard
Ohhh, buddy. That pitch scared ME
Even on our tough days, i love the deep counts that guys like cutch, joe, and santana seem to always be working
Bard has good numbers, but if I was a Rockie’s fame, I would be nervous whenever he pitches about giving up multiple walks quickly
what a humble exit by Moreta
what happened to that tacky money swag?
dude is doing a good job
Dauri looking sharp today!
This last 10 plus games reminds me of ST, same dreadful performance.
Pirates catchers 35-37 at not throwing out runners, rockies catchers are 16-32 . Dfa rockies catcher today starters has 2 caught stealing today. But our catchers can hit?.
This is nonsense, Hedges is a defensive specialist, so check your numbers again…..
Checking . . . . .
Checking . . . . .
Checking . . . . .
. . . He sucks.
Thanks for, triple checking! I thought that guy was trying to scam me.
Good Dauri
fyi Kevin Newman has a -.5 WAR
Does Shelton realize running is not working this series.
Perhaps a moratorium on stealing for a series or so…this is ridiculous.
Shelton bringing the right hander in, in the fourth, to face the right hand batter, like that. But other than a strike out or a grounder to Hayes, I’m not sure we ever get out of this inning.
Got the tv on time to watch that monstrosity in the field
Some great veteran leadership there. Showing the young guys what not to do after being given a 3-run lead.
I’m disgusted. Televisions been shut off. No more Pirates, today.
oooohhhhh fffuuuuuuuddddgggeee
Fangraphs’ updated projections have the Pirates, Cubs & Cardinals all finishing with 78 wins, 84 losses…
Do we win the tiebreaker for better draft pick?
Give it two more weeks!
Thank you Mr. Cron for missing that foul ball cause we got DINGEZ!!!
Yum, yum. Dingerz for lunch.
cutch power!
Getting out in front feels so much better than playing catch up with this team.
Reynolds has some stubble back on the face and he doubles!!!
A stubble double!
Need his stashe mash back!
Yay Tucu!! Need mohr dingerz!!!
Dingerz make me hungry! Especially this time of day. But if I get one, I just want more!!!
Tucupita! The Man of the Hour!
Of course Joe erased on the bases right before that homer.
thatá baby
Get some runs! Suwinski’s at his best when he’s able to lay off pitches up in the zone but still attack mistakes made above the belt. It’s a fine line and he’s been on the wrong side of it the last 10 games or so. He and Reynolds have to be right for the Pirates to win consistently because of all the holes in the lineup. But that consistency comes and goes because it’s so damned hard. C’mon, Jack, we need you!
Or is Jack’s consistency mostly out of his control because it is directly related to the number of mistake pitches that are thrown to him. I see a lot of Alvarez in Suwinski. A player can do pretty well only punishing mistake pitches, as many players don’t even do that, but you can’t be consistent.
pretty sure i’ve said this before but man do i love your profile picture.
It ties the page together
I see what you did there!
Let’s take the series !!!
lets go bucs!
