P2Live: Pirates Go for the Sweep in Washington

The Pittsburgh Pirates (20-8) take on the Washington Nationals (9-17) in game three of a three-game series in Washington on Sunday afternoon.

**The Pirates traded catcher Tyler Heineman for IF/OF Vinny Capra today. Heineman was designated for assignment earlier this week.

**The new hero of baseball has been returned to Altoona today. Drew Maggi is still on the 40-man roster for now, but he’s no longer with the Pirates. Hopefully the Pirates vote him for a full World Series share this year when they split up the winnings.

**Anthony Murphy gives his thoughts on a timeline for Henry Davis to reach the majors.

PIRATES VS NATIONALS

Game Time: 1:35 PM EST
Pirates Starter: Johan Oviedo (2-1, 3.03)
Nationals Starter: Josiah Gray (1-4, 2.97)
Pirates Lineups:

Nationals Lineups:

INDIANAPOLIS VS COLUMBUS

Game Time: 1:35 PM EST
Projected Starter: Kent Emanuel (0-1, 17.36)

Kent Emanuel makes his second start for Indianapolis. His first was a very rough one that left him with that ERA you see above.

Indianapolis has a 10-16 record this year.

ALTOONA AT READING

Game has been canceled due to rain

GREENSBORO VS ROME

Game Time: 2:00 PM EST
Projected Starter: TBA

No starter for Greensboro listed.

The Grasshoppers have a 13-7 record, best among the four Pirates affiliates.

BRADENTON AT DUNEDIN

Game Time: 12 PM EST DH
Projected Starter: TBA

No starters announced yet for Bradenton’s doubleheader, but Luis Peralta was supposed to go yesterday. He may have warmed up for that game, which would rule him out for today. We will see.

Bradenton at 12-7 had the best record among Pirates affiliates until yesterday when Greensboro overtook them.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball.

When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.

The obvious conclusion I draw from this is that the Pirates were 6-1 with Drew Maggi and merely 14-8 without him.

If the lowly White Sox can score 7 in the 9th vs Rays, certainly our boys can do it.

AdministrativeSky236

Priester and gonzales for skubal?

PirateRican21

All day.

PirateRican21

On second thought, that’s a tough one, I’m not sure how long he is out and how effective he will be coming back from that injury……….

b mcferren

stupid rain delay screwed him up

skliesen

Gnats are the windshield today, Oviedo is the bug.

Oviedo doesn’t have it today. Blame it on rain delay.

Jack was thissss close to a 3-run double down the 1B line. Bummer.

skliesen

Let it rain! It may be Pirates best hope today to avoid a loss.

skliesen

Hedges with one of the best catches on a foul bunt attempt you’ll ever see.

These Pirates…🔥🔥🔥

skliesen

Unfortunately Oviedo negates by hanging a 2 strike, 2 out curve to Garcia who plates 2 runs with a hard single. 🤬🤬🤬

Wilbur Miller

Jackson Glenn with three dingerz for GBO. They’re in a rain delay in the seventh, so he may not get another chance.

chappy

Any news on Terrmarr Johnson? He hasn’t been in the lineup since, I think, his “dismal” game.

Wilbur Miller

He played in game one today.

chappy

Thanks. Missed that box score.

skliesen

They’re playing baseball in DC!

Let’s go Bucs!

Wilbur Miller

Doesn’t look promising for today, which sucks. Among other things, I was curious how this lineup would do.

ricramer

Former Bucco Nick Mears up for Colorado today.

Wilbur Miller

How’d the Gnats miss him?

Wilbur Miller

Cheng with another dinger. Maybe it’s the ballpark, but 20 power looking pretty light.

phieralph

We playing today?

Born4rf

Looking at the weather radar, it appears DC might have a 3-4 hour window if the field is not a swamp.
