Pirates DVR: Rich Hill Slider, Kyle Nicolas, Carmen Mlodzinski

Welcome to the Pirates Prospects daily video rundown, where we pull some of the top videos of the Pittsburgh Pirates across the internet.

Rich Hill

The left handed free agent pick up made his first Spring Training start on Saturday, pitching a couple of innings. We got to see most of his pitches at work, including his slider that he throws from a different arm slot than most of his other offerings.

Not only did the pitch have 22 inches of horizontal break as indicated in the tweet, but it also registered 62 inches of vertical break on it.

Carmen Mlodzinski

A look at Mlodzinski’s first spring outing from earlier on. He pitched an inning of shutout baseball, striking out one and walking another.

Kyle Nicolas

The righty originally acquired in the Jacob Stallings trade is looking to take the next step after spending his first year in the Pirates organization with Altoona. You can see the fastball/curveball/slider combination of pitches he uses.

Anthony began writing over 10 years ago, starting a personal blog to cover the 2011 MLB draft, where the Pirates selected first overall. After bouncing around many websites covering hockey, he refocused his attention to baseball, his first love when it comes to sports. He eventually found himself here at Pirates Prospects in late 2021, where he covers the team’s four full season minor league affiliates.

The ten days I spent in Bradenton, Mlodzinski might have been my biggest surprise. I see him as a future closer or set-up man. I was also very impressed with Jose Hernandez, even though I didn’t see much of him.

With the way we are seeing kids like “Mudge”, Ortiz, Priester, Burrows, Bolton, Crowe, and Nicolas step up, I am wondering just how much we are going to see some of the guys we thought were locks to be Rotation pieces for the Pirates in 2023.

Been off and on due to travel, but noticed that Bryan Reynolds only has 6 AB so far in ST. Makes me wonder if we could see a trade coming.

Mlod becoming a JTB level starter could be very helpful.
