Pirates DVR: Luis Ortiz Strikeout, Nick Gonzales And Jason Delay Home Run

Welcome to the Pirates Prospects daily video rundown, where we pull some of the top videos of the Pittsburgh Pirates across the internet.

Luis Ortiz

Few, if any, had the kind of rise through the system that Luis Ortiz had. He went from Bradenton in 2021, to finishing 2022 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Armed with a deadly fastball/slider combination, adding a third pitch would really help establish him as a legitimate starting pitcher.

He only threw a couple of changeups in his Spring Training debut, but he made it count. With two outs and a full count, Ortiz fired off an off speed pitch that got a swing and miss for a strikeout.

Nick Gonzales

After getting off to a rough start between his first Spring appearance, and the simulated game this past Sunday, Gonzales got on the scoreboard Tuesday, firing a home run for his first hit.

Jason Delay

Lost in the shuffle for the backup catcher spot, Delay was fantastic last year defensively, but like a lot of the other options in camp, struggled offensively.

This might help him stand out from the crowd.

Canaan Smith-Njigba

The outfielder originally acquired in the Jameson Taillon trade is in the thick of a crowded outfield picture that has a few spots potentially open on the major league club.

This was the hardest hit ball of the day, coming in 111.5 mph and drove in a pair of runs for the Pirates.

Anthony began writing over 10 years ago, starting a personal blog to cover the 2011 MLB draft, where the Pirates selected first overall. After bouncing around many websites covering hockey, he refocused his attention to baseball, his first love when it comes to sports. He eventually found himself here at Pirates Prospects in late 2021, where he covers the team’s four full season minor league affiliates.

Good to see the offense continue to put up lots of runs. Although it appears most of them are coming against MiLB Pitchers.
