Pirates DVR: Chavez Young Shines For Great Britain In WBC

Welcome to the Pirates Prospects daily video rundown, where we pull some of the top videos of the Pittsburgh Pirates across the internet.

Chavez Young, playing for Great Britain, has enjoyed a strong start to the season with the Pirates, playing some strong defense and showing some pop in his bat. He shows off his wheels and aggressiveness on the bases, stealing home on a double steal.

In their game against Columbia, Young comes up big with a bases-loaded, two-out hit that after the left fielder misplayed it, allowed two runs to score.

He wasn’t finished yet, also making this sliding catch along the first base line to get the second out of the fifth inning. Great Britain ended up coming away with a big win over Columbia on Monday.

Anthony began writing over 10 years ago, starting a personal blog to cover the 2011 MLB draft, where the Pirates selected first overall. After bouncing around many websites covering hockey, he refocused his attention to baseball, his first love when it comes to sports. He eventually found himself here at Pirates Prospects in late 2021, where he covers the team’s four full season minor league affiliates.

Cool to see Young taking a few seconds to interact with the fans after his catch.

Anyone know if Tahnaj Thomas has pitched for GB yet? I’ve watched all the recaps, but haven’t seen any of him. If not, it’s strange bc the guys they have had pitching weren’t very impressive, & their defense sucks, so they should try to use pitchers with strike out stuff.

Crushing loss for Colombia, who I was rooting for since most of their players actually learned baseball in Colombia. But Colombia’s loss was likely necessary for the US to advance and it’s good for the WBC if the US, DR, and Japan all make the final four.

A lot to like in this kid, but we “loaded” up with FA signings of Connor Joe and ‘Cutch, and Swagg’s is having a very solid ST.

Our 26 going North will have 5 OF, 6 IF, 2 Catchers = 13 Position Players, and 13 Pitchers.

I like Young (though I liked Alford and Allen too), but I don’t see how he should be more than AAA depth. I suppose he could begin the season with the Pirates to give Swaggerty a few weeks at AAA to further make his case and to save on service time.

The Joe and Choi moves seem to be too early in light of cutch. Choi I don’t mind. He has legitimate upside even at 30 years old and 1st base was a black hole. Joe is blocking talent that needs to sink or swim and won’t get the shot until he flops or gets hurt.

I’m as happy as anyone to have Cutch back, but it’s also an example of when an owner messes with a FO’s plans and it has led to some redundancy. Competition is good, but maybe not when that competition leads to fewer opportunities for young players. I feel like we acquired one veteran position player too many.

Joe has an option left so very well could end up in Indy as insurance policy.
