Pirates DVR: Jose Hernandez, JT Brubaker vs Oneil Cruz, Luis Ortiz

Welcome to the Pirates Prospects daily video rundown, where we pull some of the top videos of the Pittsburgh Pirates across the internet.

Jose Hernandez

The Pirates Rule 5 selection this offseason, Hernandez’s path to the majors might not be as easy as previous players taken. With actually competition in camp, Hernandez will have to show he can locate his fastball that can reach triple digits, as well as having the slider generate swings and misses.

JT Brubaker vs Oneil Cruz

Often overlooked, some of Brubaker’s metrics were at, or better than Mitch Keller’s. It will be a big year for the righty, as he will have to fight off several of the team’s top pitching prospects.

Luis Ortiz vs Ke’Bryan Hayes

A lot of really strong matchups in camp on Thursday, with Luis Ortiz facing off against Ke’Bryan Hayes. Ortiz is likely heading to Indianapolis, unless something drastic happens, but should be one of the first call ups the team makes should they need a starting pitcher.

Oneil Cruz

Nothing ‘special’ just your daily dose of Oneil Cruz hitting bombs.

Anthony began writing over 10 years ago, starting a personal blog to cover the 2011 MLB draft, where the Pirates selected first overall. After bouncing around many websites covering hockey, he refocused his attention to baseball, his first love when it comes to sports. He eventually found himself here at Pirates Prospects in late 2021, where he covers the team’s four full season minor league affiliates.

Scam likely

Have to pick up the pace, practice fast play fast.

Hot take: Bryan Reynolds and O’Neil Cruz will both sign extensions prior to Opening Day.

Hot take part 2: Cruz will have a 6+ WAR season in 2023, and in 2024 will have a higher WAR season than Cutch had in his MVP season.

Let it be written, let it be done!

If Cruz sticks at SS, his WAR should be insane if he can reach even a tolerably bad level of defense. Offense is worth more WAR at a true glove-first position.
