Prospect Watch: Good Outings for Yajure, Ortiz, DeVito

Published:

All the minor league teams that got their games in today won, except the one that played at PNC Park.

Bradenton got rained out and will try to play two tomorrow.  Greensboro was supposed to play two today, but one has been postponed due to wet grounds.  How the grounds can be too wet for one game but not the other is a mystery, but . . . minor league baseball.

  • Nick Mears 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K

Game Recap:

Indianapolis (57-57) beat Iowa, 6-2.  Miguel Yajure had a solid start, which was certainly welcome.  He gave up two runs over five innings and fanned seven.  Zach Matson and Nick Mears each worked a perfect inning.  Matson fanned two and Mears struck out the side, throwing ten of 13 pitches for strikes.  Mears struggled throughout his rehab, so his outing was another welcome sign.  Hunter Stratton threw the last two innings.  Ji-Hwan Bae seems to be picking up where he left off before getting hurt.  He went 2-for-4 with a triple, and is now 3-for-7 since returning.  He had two runs and two RBIs in this game.  Jose Godoy was the only other Indian with two hits.  Cal Mitchell reached three times on a single, walk and hit batsman.  Mason Martin had a single and a walk.  Martin stole his 12th base and Hoy Park his 10th.  Carter Bins got the golden sombrero.

  • Colin Selby 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

Game Recap:

Altoona (57-56) scored five times in the sixth and went on to beat Harrisburg, 7-4.  Luis Ortiz had another strong start, giving up two runs over six innings while fanning eight.  He still ran into a common problem for him, where anything he gives up comes all at once.  This time he gave up three hits to start the fourth inning, out of five allowed for the whole six innings.  He held the damage, though, to two runs.  Enmanuel Mejia gave up a couple runs in relief.  Tahnaj Thomas worked an inning and two-thirds without allowing a run, although he let one of Mejia’s score.  Colin Selby got the save with a scoreless ninth.  Everybody in the lineup had at least one hit except Matt Fraizer.  Blake Sabol and Jared Triolo each had a single and a walk.  Triolo has a .999 OPS in August.  Sabol won the coveted TOOTBLAN of the Month Award by getting picked off first with the bases loaded and two out.  Endy Rodriguez and Aaron Shackelford each had a double.  Rodriguez and Nick Gonzales each reached on a hit and a walk.  Gonzales is batting .348 in six games since returning from a ten-week day-to-day absence.

  • Ricky DeVito 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K

Game Recap:

Greensboro (48-62) got a run in the top of the ninth to edge Rome, 4-3.  Eli Wilson singled to drive in the winning run.  Wilson, Francisco Acuna and Hudson Head each had two hits, including a triple by Head.  Acuna has suddenly become a force for the Hoppers, with an OPS of .864 in July and .928 in August.  Sean Sullivan started and went only two innings, giving up two runs on four hits.  Ricky DeVito followed with four scoreless innings.  He gave up just two hits and two walks, and struck out five.  Adrian Florencio failed to retire any of the three batters he faced and was charged with the third run.  Mitchell Miller entered with the bases loaded and nobody out, and held Rome to one run.  He worked two scoreless innings total and Cam Junker pitched the ninth for the save.

Starting Pitcher: Owen Kellington

  • Final Line: 3 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K

Notable Performances:

  • Termarr Johnson 0-3, BB
  • Jauri Custodio 1-3, BB
  • Esmerlyn Valdez 1-3, HR (3), BB
  • A.J. Graham 1-3, 2B
  • Ronny Sanchez 1-3, HR (2)
  • Jose Garces 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K

Game Recap:

The FCL Pirates (30-23) came back from an early four-run deficit to beat the Orioles, 5-4.  Owen Kellington continued to struggle, allowing two runs in each of the first two innings.  As I noted in the comments, his stuff didn’t look nearly as sharp as it did early in the FCL season and his command was very poor.  He did manage to battle enough to last three innings.  Jose Garces overcame some shaky command to work three scoreless innings with just one hit allowed.  Daniel Rivero threw a scoreless seventh to get the save.  Most of the offense came from a pair of two-run bombs, one by Esmerlyn Valdez in the fourth and another by Ronny Sanchez in the fifth to put the Bucs ahead.  Just before Sanchez’ blast A.J. Graham got his first hit of the season by doubling a run home.  The homers were Valdez’ third on the season and Sanchez’ second.

  • Diego Chiquillo 3 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K

Game Recap:

The Pirates Black (26-31) edged the Cubs Red, 2-1.  The good guys got some strong pitching from Alexis Torres and Diego Chiquillo.  Torres allowed just one hit over four shutout innings.  Chiquillo gave up a run in three, with five strikeouts.  There were no walks, which you don’t see much.  The Pirates drew four walks and had four hits, including doubles by Daje Morales, Kelvin Diaz and Richard Ramirez.  Morales and Diaz drove in the runs.  The Bucs stole five bases without getting caught.  Morales stole his 12th and Diaz his 16th, while Angel Rodriguez stole two.

Game Recap:

The Pirates Gold ran their record to an impressive 42-15 with a 4-1 win over the Mets 2.  Andres Silvera started it off with three shutout innings, dropping his ERA to 1.54.  Wilkin Valdez worked two scoreless innings to get the win and drop his ERA to 1.62.  Wilbur Martinez went the last two innings.  He allowed no hits or walks, but was charged with an unearned run.  The hitters managed four hits but drew seven walks.  Eybert Escalona had the only extra base hit, a double, and also reached on a walk.  Juan Machado, Carlos Tirado, Isaias Dipre and Jhonson Pena also reached base twice each.  Tony Blanco, Jr., saw some rare action, going 1-for-4.

Having followed the Pirates fanatically since 1965, Wilbur Miller is one of the fast-dwindling number of fans who’ve actually seen good Pirate teams. He’s even seen Hall-of-Fame Pirates who didn’t get traded mid-career, if you can imagine such a thing. His first in-person game was a 5-4, 11-inning win at Forbes Field over Milwaukee (no, not that one). He’s been writing about the Pirates at various locations online for over 20 years. It has its frustrations, but it’s certainly more cathartic than writing legal stuff. Wilbur is retired and now lives in Bradenton with his wife and three temperamental cats.
