Game Recap:

Altoona (52-55) edged Binghamton, 3-2.  Aaron Shortridge has had a rough time since he joined the Curve, but in this one he gave up only an unearned run in five innings of work.  J.C. Flowers was just as good in three innings of relief, allowing two hits and striking out four.  Tahnaj Thomas got into some trouble in the ninth, but Tyler Samaniego got the last out to register the save.  He now has nine at the AA level as well as four before he got promoted from Greensboro.  Malcom Nunez contributed his first home run since the Pirates acquired him.  He also had a single, a walk and a sac fly, and drove in two.  Everybody in the lineup had at least one hit except Liover Pegureo, who was 0-for-4.  Andres Alvarez had two hits.

HIGH-A: GREENSBORO GRASSHOPPERS

Game Time: 6:30pm

Box Score: LINK

Starting Pitcher: Sean Sullivan

  • Final Line: 4 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K

Notable Performances:

  • Dariel Lopez 2-4
  • Abrahan Gutierrez 1-3, BB
  • Hudson Head 1-3, 2B

Game Recap:

Greensboro (46-59) got blanked by Jersey Shore, 8-0.  Sean Sullivan had a good start, fanning seven and allowing just one hit over four innings, but he was charged with two unearned runs due to errors in the third and fourth innings.  Jack Carey gave up five runs in his two innings.  The hitters produced just five hits, walked once and whiffed 11 times; very bad walk-to-strikeout ratios are becoming commonplace in the system.  Hudson Head had the only extra base hit, a double.  Dariel Lopez had two singles.  The Hoppers had just one at-bat with a runner in scoring position.

LOW-A: BRADENTON MARAUDERS

Starting Pitcher: Owen Sharts

  • Final Line: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K

Notable Performances:

  • Termarr Johnson 1-3, 2B
  • Jauri Custodio 2-4, HR (2)
  • Shalin Polanco 1-3, 2B
  • Owen Kellington 1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 K
  • Jaycob Deese 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
  • Elijah Birdsong 1 IP, 1 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

Game Recap:

The FCL Pirates (28-19) got smashed by the 11-36 Orioles, 8-1.  The game at least featured Termarr Johnson’s first pro hit, a double off the right field fence.  The mysterious A.J. Graham played most of the game at short, going 0-for-3.  The pitching could have been better; the Bucs walked ten.  That started with the game’s first two batters, as Owen Sharts didn’t look like he’d last long.  He gave up an unearned run and had runners at the corners with nobody out, but then recovered to fan two and get the third out without any more runs.  Owen Kellington had a rough outing, walking three and allowing two runs in an inning and two-thirds.  He now has an ERA of 11.57.  Two of this year’s draftees, 17th-rounder Jaycob Deese and 18th-rounder Elijah Birdsong, made their pro debuts, each going one inning.  Deese gave up two hits and an unearned run, and Birdsong gave up a walk that was followed by a two-run homer.  The offense produced only five hits, while striking out eight times and drawing no walks.  Jauri Custodio had two of the hits, including a two-out longball in the ninth that averted the shutout.  That was Custodio’s second of the year, the other one coming yesterday.  Shalin Polanco had a double.  Nick Cimillo, this year’s 16th-rounder, had a tough day behind the plate, with three passed balls.  Esmerlyn Valdez came out for a pinch hitter in the middle of an at-bat, so he must have hurt himself on a swing.

Starting Pitcher: Alexis Torres

  • Final Line: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

Notable Performances:

  • Ewry Espinal 2-3
  • July Vittini 1-3, 2B
  • Yoerys Hernandez 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

Game Recap:

In what would have to be regarded as an upset, the Black team (24-28) won this intra-organizational matchup with the Gold team (36-15), 4-1.  The winners got some good pitching from Alexis Torres and Yoerys Hernandez, each of whom worked three scoreless innings.  Torres allowed one hit, Hernandez none.  Ewry Espinal had two of the team’s five hits.  Catcher July Vittini, in his second pro game, had the only extra base hit in the game, a double, along with a run and an RBI.  Robert De Paula had a steal of home after reaching on a hit batsman.

RK: DSL PIRATES GOLD

Game Time: 11:00am

Box Score: LINK

Starting Pitcher: Andres Silvera

  • Final Line: 3.2 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 0 BB, 3 K

Notable Performances:

  • Yordany De Los Santos 1-3
  • Isaias 1-2, BB

Game Recap:

The surprise in this game for the Gold team was that all the damage came off starter Andres Silvera, who had an ERA of 0.79 through his first nine starts.  He’d allowed only three earned runs before this game, never more than one in a game.  Darlin Diaz, Yojeiry Osoria and Patricio Ress combined to retire the last ten batters, five on strikes, without a baserunner.  The Gold team managed only two hits, singles by Yordany De Los Santos and Isaias Dipre.  Tony Blanco, Jr., played the full game as DH and drove in the only run with a ground out.
