Prospect Watch: Debuts – Termarr Johnson in FCL, Endy Rodriguez for Altoona, and Others

Published:

Johnson and Tanner Tredaway saw their first pro action with the FCL Bucs, at short and in left, respectively.  Keep an eye on the FCL Pirates and Bradenton daily.  There should be still more debuts at some point.  Who knows, maybe even Lonnie White, Jr., will reappear.  Or maybe not, as he’s no longer listed as rehabbing with the FCL team.  He’s just on the 60-day IL at Bradenton.

Other debuts:  Johan Oviedo (AAA) and Malcom Nunez (AA) from the Quintana trade, Jase Bowen in high A.

Game Recap:

Greensboro (44-57) gave up 13 runs in the third inning to a very bad Jersey Shore team and went on to lose, 14-3.  Starter Ricky DeVito gave up two hits, two walks and a hit batsman in the inning, and ended up being charged with six runs, five earned.  Wandi Montout followed and walked all three batters he faced.  All three scored, then Brayan Roman came on to allow the last four runs.  Errors by Ernny Ordonez and Dariel Lopez played a big role, with Lopez’ miscue giving him an alarming total of 25 on the season.  Adrian Florencio worked four innings and managed to allow just an unearned run while fanning five.  Jase Bowen had a rough introduction to high A ball, going hitless in four at-bats with three strikeouts.  Yoyner Fajardo had two singles and a double, and Francisco Acuna had two doubles.  Hudson Head and Abrahan Gutierrez each contributed a double.

Game Recap:

Bradenton (52-50) lost to Palm Beach, 6-4.  Anthony Solometo and Bubba Chandler both pitched in the game.  Solometo started and gave up just three hits and a walk over four innings, but the walk and two of the hits came in the second and cost him two runs.  Chandler worked three innings and fanned six, which is the good part.  He also walked three and allowed three hits, one of them a two-run home run.  That tied the score, 4-4, and Yunior Thibo got the loss because of two unearned runs that scored on a pair of errors in the eighth.  On the offensive end, Sergio Campana had a good day, reaching four times on two hits and two walks.  Jack Brannigan had a single and a double, and Norkis Marcos also had two hits.  Tsung-Che Cheng and Wyatt Hendrie each had a double.

Notable Performances:

  • Alessandro Ercolani 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K

Game Recap:

Termarr Johnson and Tanner Tredaway made their debuts as the FCL Pirates (27-17) beat the Red Sox, 2-0, in a game that went only seven innings due to rain.  It wasn’t a good day for hitters to debut, as each team had just three hits.  Johnson and Tredaway each went 0-for-2.  The first run came when Shalin Polanco got hit by a pitch and came around on a balk, groundout and wild pitch.  The Pirates didn’t get a hit until Enmanuel Terrero, batting for Johnson, beat out a bunt with one out in the sixth.  He came around on a two-out double by Nick Gonzales.  Lolo Sanchez had a single for the only other hit.  Hung-Leng Chang and Alessandro Ercolani combined for the shutout; a shutout by guys from Taiwan and San Marino is something you probably won’t see every day.  Chang went four, allowing just two hits.  Ercolani worked the last three, giving up a hit and two walks, and fanning five.

Game Recap:

The Gold team (33-14) beat the NYY Bombers, 7-4.  Starter Patricio Ress did himself in with his own defense, committing two errors.  Those led to two unearned runs in a three-run third, which got Ress out of the game.  Darlin Diaz followed with two and two-thirds scoreless innings and Rafael Mendez allowed a run over the last two.  The offense came largely from walks and steals, nine and eight, respectively.  The Pirates had only five hits, although one was Wesley Zapata’s first pro home run.  Isaias Dipre had two hits, stole two bases and scored twice.  Gustavo Armas walked all three times up and stole two bases.  Catcher Lennyn Nunez walked twice and stole three bases, giving him five steals just 18 plate appearances into his career.  Yordany De Los Santos drew three walks.

He’s even seen Hall-of-Fame Pirates who didn’t get traded mid-career, if you can imagine such a thing. His first in-person game was a 5-4, 11-inning win at Forbes Field over Milwaukee (no, not that one). He’s been writing about the Pirates at various locations online for over 20 years. It has its frustrations, but it’s certainly more cathartic than writing legal stuff. Wilbur is retired and now lives in Bradenton with his wife and three temperamental cats.
