Pirates Select LHP Julian Bosnic with Their 14th Round Pick

Published:

With their 14th round pick in the 2022 MLB draft, the Pittsburgh Pirates selected left-handed pitcher Julian Bosnic out of South Carolina. He’s from Pittsburgh, Pa.

Bosnic was a 16th round pick of the San Francisco Giants last year, but chose to go back to the University of South Carolina. He’s a senior, who turns 23 in December. He stands 6’3″, 218 pounds. Bosnic was a two-way player entering college, but missed his freshman season due to Tommy John surgery. He threw 6.2 scoreless innings in 2020, though it came with eight walks. He had a 2.84 ERA and 78 strikeouts in 50.2 innings in 2021. He was injured during Spring Training for his college season and had minor elbow surgery that ended his season before it started. He is committed for Arkansas next season if he doesn’t sign.

A scouting report from 2021 says Bosnic gets his fastball up to 95 MPH and “he has great off-speed stuff”.

John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects.
