Pirates Discussion: Bullpen Falters Despite Key Hit

Published:

The Pittsburgh Pirates couldn’t seal their fifth victory in a row after another strong pitching performance from their starter.

Two days after Mitch Keller threw seven innings of one run baseball, JT Brubaker took it a step further and threw seven innings of shutout ball against the Miami Marlins.

Unfortunately Duane Underwood Jr. and David Bednar weren’t up to the task, and couldn’t close out the game. Just after Ke’Bryan Hayes singled to give the Pirates the lead in extras — with Mike Rabelo apparently getting another bad read, and sending a runner to be thrown out by a mile — Bednar struggled to put batters away, letting the winning run cross the plate by way of a wild pitch.

The Pirates get another chance to take the series on Thursday afternoon, facing left handed starter of the Marlins in Braxton Garrett. They’ve fared well against southpaws recently, so hopefully the Pirates and Jake Marisnick’s three game hitting streak (5 for last 10) are up to the task.

Time: 12:10 PM EST

Pirates Starter: Zach Thompson (3-6, 4.38)

Marlins Starter: Braxton Garrett (1-3, 4.33)

Thompson Notes: This will be Zach Thompson’s 15th start of the season, marking a career high after making 14 starts for his opponent, the Marlins, last season. Thompson hasn’t been able to complete the 5th inning in his last three starts, but he also hasn’t given up more than two runs in each of his last six. Thankfully Keller and Brubaker managed to help keep the bullpen’s workload light in recent days.
