Giants Claim Aaron Fletcher; Cam Vieaux Clears Waivers

Published:

Two lefty pitchers recently designated for assignment by the Pittsburgh Pirates made moves today. Aaron Fletcher was claimed by the San Francisco Giants, while Cam Vieaux cleared waivers and he was optioned to Indianapolis.

Vieaux was designated for assignment when Jake Marisnick returned from the Injured List on Monday. Vieaux  made his big league debut on June 17th and made five appearances for the Pirates before being sent back to Indianapolis. He allowed nine runs in five innings, with most of that damage coming in his final appearance. The 28-year-old lefty has a 2.12 ERA and an 0.88 WHIP in 29.2 innings with Indianapolis.

Fletcher was DFA’d when the Pirates acquired pitcher Yohan Ramirez from Cleveland. The 26-year-old Fletcher had a 6.94 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP in 11.2 innings over nine appearances with the Pirates, though he was pitching much better in Indianapolis, where he had a 1.45 ERA  in 18.2 innings.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
