Prospect Watch: Greensboro Wins a Slugfest; Shortridge with a Second Strong Rehab Start

It’s a light schedule today, as the DSL/FCL teams all have off on Sundays. We have three afternoon games and one night game for Altoona. I’ll have to fill in the missing starting pitchers as they become available. The Bradenton starter changed from Jake Sweeney to the second rehab start for Aaron Shortridge.

It was not a memorable debut for Justin Meis in High-A. He faced five batters and all five reached base on three hits and a walk. He allowed three runs, as Garrett Leonard kept it from being worse by picking up three outs, while stranding both inherited runners. Meis threw 31 pitches, 18 for strikes. Leonard pitched well in this slugfest, giving up one run in three innings. Adrian Florencio followed with a scoreless fourth inning before the first three batters reached against him in the fifth. Ricky DeVito came on and let in all three inherited runs, plus two of his own. He threw a scoreless sixth, then gave way to Oliver Mateo who handled the seventh without a run. Wandi Montout took the eighth and allowed a run. Cameron Junker got the save with a scoreless ninth, as Greensboro won 11-10.

LOW-A: BRADENTON MARAUDERS

P2Daily: It’s Bradenton Marauders Week on Pirates Prospects

Game Time: 12:00 PM

Box Score: LINK

Starting Pitcher: Aaron Shortridge (0-0, 0.00)

  • Final Line:  3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 SO

Notable Performances:

Brennan Malone 2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO

Jase Bowen 2-for-4, 2 SB, RBI

Rodolfo Nolasco 0-for-4

Sergio Campana 1-for-3, HR, RBI, BB

Deivis Nadal 0-for-3, BB

Game Recap:

Aaron Shortridge made his second rehab start with Bradenton, during his first week back on the mound since 2019. He was impressive with the results in both games, going three shutout innings for the second time. This time on one hit, one walk and four strikeouts, while throwing 30 of 41 pitches for strikes. Brennan Malone followed with his first appearance for Bradenton. He pitched for the FCL Pirates earlier this week. He went two innings, allowing a run on two hits, one walk and three strikeouts in two innings. However, he showed off some impressive stuff with his four-pitch mix, so he should do better as he knocks off some rust. Jake Sweeney followed with three shutout/no-hit innings, then Yunior Thibo closed out the win with a scoreless ninth.

The Marauders got on the board first with Sergio Campana’s second homer, a solo shot. Luke Brown singled in Campana with the second run. Jase Bowen made it 3-1 with a fifth inning single. Wyatt Hendrie made it 4-1 with a single, then Luke Brown followed with a two-run single, as Bradenton won 6-1. Bowen had two hits and two steals, giving him 12 pilfers on the season. Campana scored three runs.

It does not look like Davis will have a major league career since he can not get out of the way balls are pitched to him. I didn’t look anything up but in two years I doubt he has 100 at bats and about 15 HBP’s.

Wilbur Miller

Looks like Samaniego got back in a groove. 2 IP, 5 K.

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

This should be a good AB. Reading bringing in the 29 yr old that throws high 90’s to face Tank

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

CWS talk. He’s not draft eligible, but I just wanted to say this UNC CF, Vance Honeycutt, is an absolute boss. Freshman with 25 HR’s, 29 SB’s, and has made some of the most ridiculous catches in their game today. K’s too much, but he’s got a couple years to work on it.

But the strikeouts 😉

He’s a classic late bloomer

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

I was looking at that yesterday and thought how he looked 12 in his photo and the clips lol

He became a man in a year

https://goheels.com/sports/baseball/roster/vance-honeycutt/23146

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

Tank didn’t get hit! He made it through a PA without getting hit!!!

AdministrativeSky236

Was holding my breath for Hank’s whole AB there lol

Wilbur Miller

Just realized Triolo is playing CF. Did that inspire him to go deep for the first time?

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

Got bored from all the singles and having to run. Wanted to jog this time. It was a shot too. I think it cleared the board in LC

AdministrativeSky236

Connor scott has reached twice on catcher’s interference? Is this the new inefficiency worth exploiting? Need to draw more catcher’s interference

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

Announcer said 3 times in 2 days lol

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

That one did not look good. They need to make Tank take a step off the plate. This is getting absurd

Wilbur Miller

Jeez, I knew he got hit first time up, but I just checked the box and realized yinz are talking about a second HBP. This is effing absurd. It’s also not sustainable.

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

First one was a love tap on the thigh. Second one was heater on the hands. He’s got guard/padding, but right now I’m waiting for his spot to bat again, to see if he bats.

AdministrativeSky236

Whered it get him?

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

Fastball on the hands

AdministrativeSky236

Yeah none of that. He needs to start hitting with his catcher’s gear on

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

I’ll let him borrow my goaltending gear

AdministrativeSky236

Henry davis wears yet another pitch

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

First pitch lol

He looked so sad it hit him. Like, “Mannnnn, again? I want to swing”

AdministrativeSky236

13 already this year! Sometimes i dont mind guys gritting their teeth and wearing one to get on base, but this is getting a bit excessive

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

He stands so close. Though this one was a breaker that wasn’t even close, and bounced off his thigh. He just looked down and sighed, “Come on, man…”

Ok he can take all of those that he wants!

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

Triolo with a ding dong big bomb!

AdministrativeSky236

Hunter stratton has really fallen off a cliff wow

agent00

as i ask if madris can play first last night…..alas. he is playing first base today! how interesting

Wilbur Miller

It’s so damn frustrating. They need to be looking high and low for guys who might be useful longer term. Madris would be a perfect, no-risk candidate to give a chance. But no, it’s more important to serve as a charity for veteran hangers-on because they’re good in the clubhouse. F*** the fans.

mpg43952

Read the article about Diego in the Trib, managers would rather have mediocre, consistent players than talented guys who may make mistakes. This year should be to see what you have in AAA/AA, not the waiver wire.

b mcferren

meh – – – Madris is a four A dude

b mcferren

would like to see Marcano wear a first base mit

Wilbur Miller

If he owns one, we need to burn it.

Mblee24

It would be nice to give him a shot in the majors. Maybe platoon with chavis at first.

Wilbur Miller

Fun watching Campana score from second twice on singles. 70 speed at least.

agent00

meis is having quite a rough high-a debut

Wilbur Miller

The ol’ infinite symbol —it’s like the mark of the beast.

Wilbur Miller

Malone looks totally different from last year. 93-94, much sharper secondary stuff. The HR was hit by a guy who’s been torching the ball this series. Got a FB up.

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

That curve he threw, and Anthony posted, was filthy. It was legit at the top of the zone, and practically landed in the dirt.

Wilbur Miller

One interesting thing was, the first few curves he threw just went straight in the dirt, didn’t draw swings. After that he started locating better. Got at least a couple taken for strikes and got some swings and misses.

FB lost a tick in his second inning, but was still effective. Command came and went. No surprises, standard stuff to work on, command and stamina. But unlike last year, the stuff was there.

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

First time we finally got to see him flash his actual potential. Watching him today left a, “So THAT’S why he was so highly rated” impression

Wilbur Miller

Yeah, that’s exactly how I felt. I saw him last year and thought, Is this the guy we heard about? Today it makes more sense.

AdministrativeSky236

He’s my new favorite prospect of the day. I sort of lost track of him while injured, but I remembered thinking highly of him when he joined the org, now that i know more about his pre-draft hype im all aboard the train!

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

I just wanted to SEE him pitch lol we’ve gotten very very limited views of him. If his stuff holds over next couple weeks, I think he could easily be in Greensboro by mid-late July (where we won’t get to see him again lol)

AdministrativeSky236

Ideally he could join jared jones, nick garcia, etc. as potentially being the next guy up as an emerging pitching prospect behind burrows, priester, etc. The more guys we have with that potential, the better

Wilbur Miller

The other interesting thing today was Sweeney. I seem to run into him at every game and I was getting tired of it, because he just looked like a guy eating innings. Today he looked better. FB was up from 87-89 to 90-91 mostly and was even effective up in the zone. Command was much better than I’ve seen before, too. I imagine he’ll be getting a lot of innings the rest of the year. He’d only thrown 41 pro innings coming into this year.

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

He feels like he’s been around forever, cause I forget he’s a JUCO pick, and “only” turns 22 in couple days. Which still isn’t great, but I felt he was few years older.

Wilbur Miller

He’s a 6’7″ lefty. How many chances you figure that gets him?

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

This many

Colin

This makes my heart happy. Hoping it’s smooth sailing from here on out

agent00

honestly if he does well the rest of the year…and most importantly stays healthy…i wonder if he starts in altoona next year.

not a lot of experience…but that stuff should play

agent00

Wilbur Miller
Wilbur Miller

Shortridge.
Still just 89-90.
That was a double.

AdministrativeSky236

It is a sad day with no morning rookie league games and by this evening all pirates baseball will be done
