Five of the seven affiliates are playing today. The FCL Pirates and the DSL Pirates Gold are both off. Nick Garcia looks to finish off a strong month of June. Coming into today, he has a 1.59 ERA in 22.2 innings. That the best mark among all of the starters for four full-season teams and it’s the third best mark for all Pirates pitchers this month.

P2Daily: It’s Altoona Curve Week on Pirates Prospects

Game Time: 6:00 PM

Box Score: LINK

Starting Pitcher: Carmen Mlodzinski (0-4, 4.50)

  • Final Line:  6 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 SO

Notable Performances:

Tucupita Marcano 1-for-4, BB, SB

Matt Gorski 1-for-2, 3B, 2 RBI

Connor Scott 0-for-3

Jared Triolo 0-for-3, BB, SB

Matt Frazier 0-for-4

Game Recap:

Carmen Mlodzinski had an outstanding performance on Wednesday after a rough start to the game. The first batter of the game reached on an error, then he served up a home run to Pirates all-time great John Nogowski. That was the end of the scoring, as he recorded 18 outs (eight by strikeout) while allowing just three more base runners. It was his first win of the season and he lowered his ERA to a 4.17 mark in 54 innings. Tahnaj Thomas allowed one run in two innings, and Bear Bellomy tossed a scoreless ninth to close out an 8-3 victory.

Matt Gorski tripled in the fourth inning and as he was pulling up to third base, he suffered some sort of lower left leg injury that required him to be carted off the field. There was no video of the injury and no play at third base, so it was just a freak injury while slowing down his running. That brought in the first two runs for Altoona. A sacrifice fly by Jared Triolo gave the Curve a lead, then Andres Alvarez singled home a run. He also brought in the fifth run with a single. Two runs then scored on a wild pitch and throwing error combo, which occurred on a strikeout. The final run scored on Blake Sabol’s eighth homer.

He allowed three runs in five innings on three hits, three walks and three strikeouts. He now has a 3.30 ERA in 62.2 innings and he finished June with a 2.28 ERA in five starts. His lone start saw him toss three no-hit innings. While he gave up some hits in this game, he pitched just as well, finishing with five shutout innings. While he was likely done with his night, the game went into a weather delay in the bottom of the fifth, then Yoelvis Reyes took over for the next three innings and gave up one run. Mitchell Miller pitched the ninth and allowed three runs, as Bradenton lost 4-1. The only run for the Marauders scored on Tsung-Che Cheng’s third homer. Deivis Nadal had two hits, including his seventh double. Rodolfo Nolasco walked twice.

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

I’m surprised Marauders waited it out. Seemed to take a while

Mark Appel making his MLB debut in 9th inning on MLB channel. What?

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

Forgot Patrick Dorrian was now in Brewers system, playing on Nashville

Wilbur Miller

Him and Pablo Reyes.

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

Don’t forget Lindblom!

It’s also the team of lost misfits. David Dahl and Jon Singleton.

Which, crazy how they pick up these failed too guys, and actually keep them in Triple A to work out of their funks instead of the whole group in MLB.

Well, the Brewers aren’t trying to lose….

Gorski injury hurts. So much for that fantasy I had of him coming up after AS break to lead Pirates on a 47 game winning streak.

Wilbur Miller

Sergio Umana??

Well, they didn’t hit him. Rain delay, so he is done.

Wilbur Miller

He always struck me as just a guy to throw a couple late innings out of the pen, so I’m pleasantly surprised at his last couple outings.

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

I think of him as a raw, softer tossing, Noe Toribio

Jackson Glenn is alive!

Nolasco just took one off the helmet. Stayed in the game though.

Wilbur Miller

Well, this isn’t good. Gorski carted off after running out a triple. Couldn’t put any weight on one leg. Looked like an ankle. Camera missed it completely but the announcer said Gorski hopped the last couple steps. There was no play at third or slide.

That’s bad news for Gorski

He’s certainly done enough this year to earn a spot on the 40-man roster

Wilbur Miller

Hope it’s not bad. Just sucks for him. He hit the ground running in AA. Was really mashing.

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

If I had to guess, he was probably thinking in the parker, and changed his mind while trotting to 3B.

Wilbur Miller

Makes sense. The ball rolled a long ways.

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

I’ll be waiting to hear what it is. And if it’s “minor”

Wilbur Miller

Please not “minor”!!!

Yup! Just a minor lower body injury. Should be back by next year at this time!

Wilbur Miller

Thank heavens it’s not superficial. Those are usually fatal.

Just “saw” it, and didn’t sound good. Ugh

Just from reading the story and now the comments, my first thought was achilles, but I surely hope not…

That stinks. I wondered what happened. Like you said no camera on him running to third and I had the sound muted.

Bucs'N'Pucks (Jeff Reed)

No one is really “wow’ing” in Greensboro, but that’s not a too shabby looking lineup

I dont know where garcia’s stuff is, but hes showing he should be ready for altoona as soon as there is room for him

Recall that he’s very inexperienced. A D-III infielder with very few IP.
