The Pittsburgh Pirates (13-17) take on the Cincinnati Reds (7-24) in a four-game series at PNC Park, with game one on Thursday night at 6:35 PM. The Pirates are sending out JT Brubaker (0-2, 5.68) to go up against right-hander Connor Overton (0-0, 2.53), who gave up two runs over 5.1 innings to the Pirates five days ago in Cincinnati.
If you missed it from earlier, the Pirates made two moves:
Rodolfo Castro recalled from Indianapolis

If you haven’t seen the updates yet:

We shouldn’t expect much when a developing team faces such a juggernaut.
I recall commenting, last September, how Overton interested me, seemed crafty and had a plan on the mound. He then went out and got destroyed his last two games after my comments🤣… anyways, ill keep a peek on him this year for the heck of it🤷♂️
With our plethora of top notch pitching it makes sense we didn’t keep him around
More reasons to not change the size of the first base bag. When the pirates are batting 🙂
Absolutely no reason to let Underwood pitch in a close game.
At one point Walk mentioned Underwood has enough pitches to go three inning, lol. WTF?
Classic Pirates. Kranick and Sulser pitch very well, so they get cut and the team adds Underwood to throw BP to the Reds.
Trade bait. Along with Gamel, Van Meter, Newman, ‘sugo, Vogelbach, Tucker, etc.
Kranick pitched 3 VG innings against the Dodgers, so he was ready to be optioned back to AAA.
Andy Haines really made some adjustments from 5 days ago. That was impressive hitting.
Just when they’d surged all the way to 14th in the NL in R/G, reality returns.
So Hembree doesn’t know how to hold runners, another great quality!
Here we are in the fangraphs age of information but who is tracking mental errors. That’s at least 2 tonite. JT in the windup with a runner on and balks. Gamel gets picked blatantly easily.
Nice debut from Alldred. Wonder if he keeps going through the bottom of the lineup.
Hayes needs to wait until he goes on the road to pull the ball in the air.
Let’s get some runs!
Will be interested in seeing Alldred’s 89mph heater.
Some things never change. I’m trying hard to remember how long ago it was when the Pirates didn’t make guys like Overton look like Cy Young.
He didn’t look like Cy Young during his 6 appearances with Bucs last September. Had a zero ERA with Toronto before we got him, and has a sub-two ERA with Reds after we let him go. But while here, he had a crisp 8+ ERA.
Oh I remember very well.
Are all of our hitters practicing rolling over tonight?
It’s idiotic to be scoreboard watching…….but……Cards lose 2 out of 3 to O’s. Chance to gain a game tonite.
How about these scores, O’s win 5-3, lose 10-1 then win 3-2. A lot like the Pirates- Dodgers series, lol.
And Jack Suwinski is Nate McLouth
The Pirates would take that from Suwinski
That comment just spurred me to take a peek at Polanco’s numbers this season with Yomiuri Giants. Across the board, his numbers are very similar to his MLB career stats, except fewer Ks. Maybe that’s his ceiling wherever he plays. Hope he’s enjoying playing at least.
Big Inning! Right Here! Right Now! Take’em out of this game with a 6 spot
JT always looking like he on meth.
Well, he is from Ohio
Hang it high, JT
Need to get some freakin’ baserunners…
Need Reynolds to be resemble the player he was last year.
Reds announcers going ham on information.
Conor Overton pitcher for the Pirates last year? I must’ve missed that. He elected to play in Independent Ball for a year to completely reconfigure how he pitches.
Also, they mentioned Cole Tucker got sent down and the one announcer thinks it was a mistake. He said , “He’s struggled but he is always hustling. He plays hard. He’s made some great plays against us at SS and 2b.”
Now, I am what some may say is a Tucker apologist. Maybe it was that first AB home run? First game? I just remember where I was. But he’s full of charisma and smiles. My man loves to play the game. I want to see him succeed. Because you can see he has fun out there.
Prayers for my boy, Cole.
And Vanessa Hudgens.
Someone said it best on another thread……we all wish him well in his life’s work.
I like the new commenting system and I love the recent comment box above it. It will take me a while to get used to my new/old handle and I look forward to laughing trying to figure out who was who during the last comment regime!!
Well, I’m the artist formerly known as Piraterican21, you?
Buccoholic. Goes back to the ancient Pirates message board days
I know Buccoholic, nice to meet you again!
Brubaker needs to work low in the zone, he gets hammer when ever he elevates and that makes sense since his best pitches are slider/sinker.
ALL the Pirates starters are doing this and I don’t know if it’s a pitching coach thing or what. But Keller especially. Wilson especially. JT. Thompson is everywhere. And Quintana… Honestly I’m not sure.
Keller I get, his FB of choice is a four seamer and that works better on top with velo, but I agree with you, is not for everyone it’s almost like Searage and his sinker.
But when Keller gets rocked… And it happens often. It’s always the fastball up. Last start against the Reds, the Reds commentators talked about it a lot. Literally predicting his pitch spot and selection…
Hope everyone is having a good day.
With that said.
Goddang.
Gravatar to create an avatar for this new commenting thing is currently the bane of my existence.
I came in hyped to see a solid Pirates W. And I’m still hopeful! But Reynolds walked… And then Stephenson drove Moose in before I finally gave up trying to create an account avatar.
I am old.
Good day.
Go to the account page and upload from there. There’s an easier way.
Thanks Tim!
I do have a new Word Press and Gravatar account now though 😉
So our 4th OFer is Castillo. Let’s hope our 3 stay healthy. We’re pitcher heavy as usual.
Well Castillo was looking pretty accomplished at ss so Shelton had to do something, lol.
The Greg Allen 60 day IL is still bothering me!
Glad they put Castro in the lineup right away.
I’m glad he is playing, but SS?
Could have kept Diego at ss and Rodolfo at 2nd but then VanMeter would have to go back to his best position….dugout!
In a way is a big middle finger to Cruz, he is the SS depth in AAA and the guy who is the starting 3b gets called up to play SS.
Gladder yet that he replaced Tucker
