The Pittsburgh Pirates have added left-handed pitcher Cam Alldred to the active roster in time for Wednesday’s afternoon game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. To make room on the 40-man roster, catcher Roberto Perez has be placed on a 60-day injured list due to his weekend hamstring injury. To make room on the 26-man roster, Beau Sulser has been optioned to Indianapolis.
Alldred has pitched outstanding this season, and has been mentioned here numerous times recently for his work this year. He does not throw hard, typically sitting 88-89 MPH, but he hides the ball well, so his stuff plays up. He also controls his pitches well, which he needs to be successful. He has a 1.52 ERA, an 0.89 WHIP and a 3:15 BB/SO ratio in 17.2 innings with Indianapolis this season. All of the damage he allowed came in his second outing of the season. He has throw 16 shutout innings in his other seven games.
Sulser just pitched four innings last night and allowed four runs, so he wasn’t going to be available for at least the next few days due to his pitch count. He posted a 3.72 ERA in 9.2 innings over four appearances, though he has allowed nine total runs, with some of them being unearned due to his own error.
