Prospect Watch: Doubleheader for Indianapolis

Indianapolis got rained out yesterday, so they will attempt to play a doubleheader today. The other three affiliates start their season tomorrow. Minor League rosters have been announced.

Game Recap:

Game One: Indianapolis won game one over Omaha by a 5-3 score. Cam Vieaux got the spot start and he went two scoreless innings. Matt Eckelman allowed three runs while recording one out, but Hunter Stratton and Yerry De Los Santos combined for 4.2 scoreless innings for the win. Indianapolis had ten hits and half went for extra-bases, with doubles from Canaan Smith-Njigba, Cal Mitchell and Jared Oliva, as well as triples from Rodolfo Castro and Mason Martin. Ji-hwan Bae had an RBI and a run scored. Brendt Citta drove in a run.

Game Two: Omaha won game two 6-2. Starter Beau Sulser had a rough outing, allowing three runs in 3.2 innings. Blake Weiman surrendered one run in 1.1 innings and Eric Handhold made his debut in the Pirates system and gave up two runs in two innings. Indianapolis struggled with contact in game two, striking out 12 times in their 24 at-bats. Cal Mitchell reached base twice on a walk and single, then picked up two stolen bases. He had an RBI and a run. Mason Martin, Rodolfo Castro and Ji-hwan Bae each picked up their first double. Travis Swaggerty and Bae each swiped a bag.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long.
