Prospect Watch: Mlodzinski and Florencio Struggle in Season Debuts

It wasn’t the best day in the system, as only Indianapolis won.  The starters mostly got pummeled and a lot of the relief pitching wasn’t good, either.

Game Recap:

Indianapolis (2-2) beat Omaha, 3-2, on a walkoff single by Travis Swaggerty with one out in the bottom of the ninth.  Cristofer Melendez had given up the tying run in the top of the inning, unearned due to his own error.  Chase De Jong started and allowed a run over four innings while fanning six.  Cam Alldred followed with three and two-thirds scoreless innings, striking out five.  Indy got its first two runs on a home run by Cal Mitchell, his second of the year, and a fielder’s choice following singles by Oneil Cruz and Rodolfo Castro.  Swaggerty, Cruz and Hunter Owen each had two hits.

Game Recap:

Altoona (0-1) lost its opener to Harrisburg, 9-6.  Carmen Mlodzinski had a rocky introduction to AA ball, giving up five runs in three and two-thirds innings.  Bear Bellomy didn’t fare much better, giving up three more in three and a third.  Zach Matson made his Pirates debut, allowing a run in two innings while striking out three.  The offense came on two-run home runs by Liover Peguero and Matt Fraizer, and a two-run single by Carter Bins.  Jack Suwinski had a single and a double, and Tucupita Marcano had two singles.

HIGH-A: GREENSBORO GRASSHOPPERS

Game Recap:

Greensboro (0-1) got bombed by Rome, 16-6.  Adrian Florencio failed to last two innings after throwing 58 pitches.  He was charged with three runs, two earned.  All six Grasshoppers’ pitchers in the game allowed earned runs, with Garrett Leonard and Eddie Yean faring especially badly.  Greensboro pitchers walked 15 on the day.  Four of the Hoppers runs came in the fifth, when Maikol Escotto led off with a home run and Matt Gorski later hit a three-run shot.  The other runs came in the sixth on a two-run single by Henry Davis.  Nobody had more than one hit.

LOW-A: BRADENTON MARAUDERS

Game Recap:

Bradenton (0-1) lost to Dunedin, 8-4.  Justin Meis, in his first pro start, had a rough time, giving up six earned runs in three and a third.  Wilkin Ramos followed with two and two-thirds scoreless innings, although he walked three.  The offense managed only five hits.  Juan Jerez drove in two runs with a double in the fifth.  The other two runs scored in the ninth on a walk, a triple by Rodolfo Nolasco and a ground out by Jase Bowen.  No Marauders player had more than one hit.
