Winter Leagues: Lolo Sanchez Gets His First Start

Published:

A recap of Wednesday night’s action from winter ball for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

In the Dominican, Lolo Sanchez made his first start on Wednesday. He had a pinch-running appearance this year, but no plate appearances or time in the field. He started in center field and batted seventh. Sanchez went 1-for-4 with a single and a run scored. During the 2021 season at Greensboro, he had a .264/.372/.453 slash line in 104 games, with 17 homers and 30 stolen bases.

In Mexico, Randy Romero went 3-for-5 with a run scored, two RBIs, his eighth double and his 14th stolen base. He came into the day in fourth place in hits (70), three behind the two league leaders, but he finished tied for third by the end of the night. Romero is hitting .294 with a .697 OPS in 60 games.

Jared Oliva had an 0-for-4 night. He’s now hitting .245 with a .674 OPS in 24 games.

In Colombia, Tsung-Che Cheng went 0-for-3 with a walk. He is hitting .288/.358/.411 in 17 games.

Francisco Acuna went 0-for-1 with two walks. In 11 games, he is hitting .182/.289/.182 with five walks and six singles.

Here’s Sanchez’s hit, which is also his first winter league hit in the Dominican. That is a big deal there because this is the Major League level in his home country

When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long.
