Pirates Hire Eric Munson as Indianapolis Hitting Coach

Published:

It was announced today that the Pittsburgh Pirates have hired Eric Munson as their new hitting coach for Triple-A Indianapolis. Alex Stumpf broke the news, also noting that 2021 hitting coach Jon Nunnally will remain in the organization.

Munson was a first round draft pick (taken third overall) in 1999, who played parts of nine seasons in the majors between 2000 and 2009, seeing time with the Detroit Tigers, Houston Astros, Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Oakland A’s. He was a career .214/.289/.394 hitter in 361 big league games. He played pro ball until 2011, then started coaching in college and in international competitions. He opened Gold Standard Athletics in 2013 and has operated it since then, serving as the hitting, fielding and catching instructor.

John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
