Winter Leagues: Another Big Day for Rodolfo Castro; Yerry De Los Santos Debuts

Published:

Wednesday’s recap for Pittsburgh Pirates around winter ball.

In the Dominican, Rodolfo Castro had a big day, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored and a walk. As we mentioned in yesterday’s article, he was leading the Dominican winter league in OPS coming into this game. His 1.043 OPS through nine games is now 133 points higher than the second best among qualified hitters.

Yerry De Los Santos tossed a scoreless inning and picked up two strikeouts in his winter debut. Last year he made his first six appearances in the Dominican winter league and threw shutout ball in all six regular season games.

A pair of 2021 Pirates who are free agents now saw brief action in the Licey-Estrellas game. Christian Bethancourt played on defense at catcher without a plate appearance. Enyel De Los Santos tossed a scoreless inning in his first action.

In Puerto Rico, Bligh Madris came in as a pinch-hitter on Wednesday night, stayed in the game in left field and ended up going 0-for-3.  He is now 4-for-13 with two walks in four games.

Ethan Paul went 0-for-3 with a walk. In three games he’s 0-for-5 with three walks.

Michael Perez went 0-for-3 with two walks. He’s 1-for-12 in three games.

In Mexico, Randy Romero went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two stolen bases. He’s now hitting .317/.394/.367 in 31 games. He ranks fourth in the league with nine steals.

When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
