Hunter Stratton 1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K

Game Recap:

Indianapolis (47-53) won a wild one over Louisville, 13-10.  The Indians fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first, but starter Cam Vieaux managed to get through four without any more damage.  Indy scored six in the fourth to jump on top, 6-3, as the Louisville infielders kept playing handball with grounders.  Indy extended the lead to 10-4 with four runs in the seventh, then made it 13-5 with three more in the eighth.  Keury Mella had a meltdown in the ninth, though, giving up one run (plus one he’d allowed in the eighth) and leaving the bases loaded with nobody out.  John O’Reilly let all of those runners score and one of his own before getting the last out.  Blake Weiman, just back from the injured list, threw a scoreless inning to get the win.  Indy had only eight hits, but also drew eight walks and two hit batsmen.  Jared Oliva had a big day, going 3-for-3 with a walk, a hit batsman and five RBIs.  Christian Bethancourt and Hunter Owen each scored three times without getting a hit; Bethancourt walked three times and Owen twice.  Phillip Evans had two doubles.  Ethan Paul drove in four runs with a grounder and a three-run double.

Flowers finally settled things down, fanning eight and giving up just two hits in three and two-thirds innings.  The Grasshoppers pounded out 17 hits, including ten for extra bases, even though it wasn’t a home game.  Liover Peguero had two singles, his 13th home run of the year and three RBIs.  Jared Triolo hit three doubles and Aaron Shackelford two.  Matt Gorski had a double and two singles, and Will Matthiessen launched his 11th home run at the level, with two aboard.

Starting Pitcher:  Luis Peralta 4 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 K

Notable Performances:

Braylon Bishop 1-3, BB, SB

Juan Jerez 0-3, BB, SB

Lonnie White, Jr. 0-4

Bubba Chandler 1-3, HR (1), BB

Wyatt Hendrie 3-4, 2B

Game Recap:

The FCL Gold team (23-11) beat the Black team (15-19), 5-4, on an unearned run in the top of the seventh.  The Gold team built up a 4-1 lead, as starter Joelvis Peralta allowed just a run over three innings.  Brennan Malone followed, giving up a run in two innings.  Dante Mendoza vultured the win after allowing two runs to tie the game.  Every player in the Gold lineup had exactly one hit except Mike Jarvis, who had a single and a double, and Rodolfo Nolasco, who went hitless but had a sacrifice fly.  Randy Romero hit a triple.  Another 2021 draftee, Luke Brown, had a single and a sacrifice fly.  For the Black team, starter Luis Peralta gave up four runs over four innings.  Wilkin Ramos threw a scoreless inning and Yoelvis Ramos got tagged with the loss due to the unearned run.  Bubba Chandler played short and hit his first pro home run, although he also committed the seventh-inning error.  I know some folks aren’t happy about Chandler hitting and not pitching, but he’s far from alone.  The Pirates drafted and signed three prep and seven college pitchers.  Only one, tenth rounder Justin Meis, has pitched in a game.  (Another, Owen Sharts, is recovering from Tommy John surgery, although his name alone should be enough to get some batters out.  There’s also the continuing mystery of A.J. Graham.)  Anyway, among other draftees, Wyatt Hendrie caught and had a double and two singles.  Braylon Bishop had a single, a walk and a steal, and Lonnie White, Jr., went hitless.  Catcher Luis Hernandez, serving as the first baseman, had a single, double and three RBIs.

Game Recap:

The Gold team (10-21) walloped the Black team (18-13), 13-4.  A lot of the carnage resulted from walks, as the Black team’s pitchers issued a dozen of them.  Starter Isaias Uribe allowed four and allowed four runs in two and a third innings.  The next three pitchers — Jonathan Salazar, Reyson Santos and Miguel Diaz — walked another eight in just three and a third innings combined, helping lead to nine runs.  The Gold pitchers managed to walk only two, none by starter Jose Garces, although he gave up two runs in three innings.  Gold first baseman Eddy Rodriguez had a big day, with two doubles and five RBIs.  Jeral Toledo had a double, three walks and a steal.  Rodolfo De La Cruz had a single, double and walk, and scored twice.  Jauri Custodio didn’t get a hit, but walked twice and scored three times.  Esmerlyn Valdez had two hits and two RBIs.  For the Black team, much of the offense came from first baseman Ronny Sanchez.  He had three hits and two RBIs.  Enmanuel Terrero and Rafael Escalante each reached base twice.

Wilbur Miller
Wilbur Miller
Having followed the Pirates fanatically since 1965, Wilbur Miller is one of the fast-dwindling number of fans who’ve actually seen good Pirate teams. He’s even seen Hall-of-Fame Pirates who didn’t get traded mid-career, if you can imagine such a thing. His first in-person game was a 5-4, 11-inning win at Forbes Field over Milwaukee (no, not that one). He’s been writing about the Pirates at various locations online for over 20 years. It has its frustrations, but it’s certainly more cathartic than writing legal stuff. Wilbur is retired and now lives in Bradenton with his wife and three temperamental cats.
