Prospect Chat: Live Look at Francisco Acuna in the Caribbean Series

Published:

The Caribbean Series is going on in Puerto Rico now and infielder Francisco Acuna from the Pittsburgh Pirates is participating in this afternoon’s game for Colombia against Mexico.  He’s playing shortstop and batting lead-off. Here’s live video of the game and the comment section will be open for any prospect questions during the game.

Acuna didn’t make our updated top 50 prospects list, but he had a nice summer with Bristol and strong winter league season since then. He has a chance to break out at 20 years old in Low-A this year if he can crack the Greensboro roster out of Spring Training. The opposing starting pitcher is Edgar Torres, who has pitched at the top level of Mexican baseball since 2015, while playing winter ball in Mexico each year. That’s quite a leap from Acuna’s experience.

Luis Escobar, who made his big league debut in 2019, is in the bullpen for Colombia and could pitch today. Mexico has Zack Dodson in the bullpen, if you like throwback prospects.

John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
