Winter Leagues: Francisco Acuna Collects Three Hits on Monday Night

Published:

A slow night in winter ball on Monday because only one team was playing that involved a Pittsburgh Pirates player. We also have some news from Australia from Monday.

In Colombia from Sunday night, Francisco Acuna went 0-for-4 with a run scored. He had a big game on Monday night, going 3-for-4 with a double and a stolen base. He started at shortstop and handled all ten plays in the field. Acuna is hitting .327/.444/.367 in 16 games. He has just four strikeouts in 63 plate appearances this winter. He’s 6-for-6 in stolen bases. The 19-year-old Acuna was an Appalachian League season All-Star this year and he finished with a .293/.362/.431 slash line in 53 games with Bristol.

Edgar Barrios went 0-for-3 with two walks on Sunday night. His team was off on Monday. He is hitting .209/.277/.209 in 17 games.

For the second week in a row in Australia, Robbie Glendinning was named as a honorable mention for the All-ABL weekly team. He is hitting .333/.375/.667 through the first eight games.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
