Winter Leagues: Williams Jerez is Off to a Strong Start; Dylan Busby Debuts in Puerto Rico

Published:

On Sunday in Puerto Rico, two Pittsburgh Pirates saw action for Gigantes de Carolina. Chris Sharpe started his second game, this time as the DH. He went 0-for-3 in Carolina’s 2-1 loss. He’s 0-for-6 with three strikeouts. Dylan Busby (pictured above) didn’t play in Friday’s opener, but he appeared off the bench on Sunday. He pinch-hit and went 0-for-1, popping out to first base to end the eighth inning.

In the Dominican, Williams Jerez continued his strong start to the winter, throwing a shutout inning. He retired all three batters he faced. Jerez has thrown 4.2 shutout innings over six appearances, while striking out six batters.

Jesus Liranzo had his second poor outing, giving up three runs, while recording just one out. The out was actually a big one at the time, as he stranded three inherited runners to end the fifth inning, but the three runs he allowed the following inning lost the game for his team. He gave up three straight hits in the sixth, then hit the final batter he faced. Two of his runs came in after he left the game. Liranzo has 12 scoreless appearances this winter, and two others in which he has allowed three runs each.

In Mexico, Fabricio Macias came on defensively in center field in the seventh inning due to an injury. Macias went 0-for-2 with a strikeout. He is hitting .212/.284/.288 in 26 games.

When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects.
