Winter Leagues: Big Opening Day for Robbie Glendinning

Published:

The season in Australia opened up with Robbie Glendinning picking right up where he left off last year when he was one of the best hitters in the league. He went 2-for-4 in the season opener, with a double and a home run, driving in three runs, as his team picked up a 6-1 victory. Last year in Australia, he posted a 1.013 OPS in 28 games.

Jerrick Suiter is also playing in Australia this year and he went 0-for-4 in his team’s 8-4 win in their opener. He played in right field.

In the Dominican on Wednesday night, Oneil Cruz played his third game and went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. He’s 2-for-11 this winter. He had just two plays in the field, a ground out and a pop out. Cruz has handled all 12 chances at shortstop.

Jesus Liranzo allowed a run on three hits in his one inning of work. He left the game with runners on the corners, two outs and Oneil Cruz coming to the plate (he struck out to end the inning). Liranzo had a 4.40 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP in 14.1 innings over 15 appearances.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
