Jared Oliva Selected for AFL Fall-Stars Game

Published:

On Tuesday afternoon, the Arizona Fall League announced the rosters for Saturday’s Fall-Stars Game. The AFL’s version of the All-Star game will be streamed on the league’s site at 8:08 PM EST and it gives you a chance to see many of the top prospects in the game. The Pittsburgh Pirates will be represented at the game by outfielder Jared Oliva.

Oliva has been on a tear since Opening Day of the AFL season. He is currently hitting .425/.549/.625 in 12 games, with 11 runs scored, ten walks, seven RBIs and he’s 7-for-7 in stolen bases. He leads the league with 17 hits, six doubles and also ranks first in average, OBP and steals.

The Pirates could have a second representative in the game. The league has a fan vote in that should be going up soon and Oneil Cruz will be one of the three names on West team ballot. Cruz has been out recently with a minor injury. He is hitting .179/.233/.179 in eight games, but he’s one of the better prospects in the league, so that’s why he’s on the fan vote in ballot. That’s a bit different from the past when just being one of the league’s best prospects got you automatically selected for the game.

When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects.
