AFL Recap: Cody Ponce and Jared Oliva Lead Peoria to Victory

The Peoria Javelinas were rained out on Thursday night. They came back on Friday night to take on the Glendale Desert Dogs on the road. Cody Ponce was on the mound and both Oneil Cruz and Jared Oliva were in the lineup, as Peoria scored four runs in the top of the first and won 5-2. They now have a 4-4 record.

Ponce threw four shutout innings in his AFL debut last week. In his second outing, he went five innings, giving up two runs on four hits and one walk. Ponce struck out five batters and had a 5:1 GO/AO ratio. He threw 51 of 74 pitches for strikes.

Jared Oliva played left field and batted third. He went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Both hits were doubles, giving him four on the season, to go along with a .375 average and a 1.058 OPS.

Oneil Cruz batted seventh and played shortstop. He came into the day batting .118 in his first five games. Cruz went 1-for-4 with a run scored and two strikeouts. He’s now 3-for-21 with three singles.
