Prospect Watch: Altoona Gets No-Hit; Steven Brault Makes a Rehab Start

Published:

P2 Top 30A look at how the current top 30 prospects did today. If a player is in the majors for an extended time or loses his prospect eligibility (Clay Holmes, Jacob Stallings, Kevin Newman and Bryan Reynolds), he will be removed from this list. Everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. If a player is out for the season (Travis MacGregor, Nick Burdi and Stephen Alemais), he will be removed and everyone below him will move up a spot. Removing these guys doesn’t mean they have lost prospect status. It is just an attempt to get more active prospects on the list. Rankings are from our updated 2019 Prospect Guide, and links on each name go to their Pirates Prospects player pages.

Prospect-Watch-Bradenton

Bradenton had a doubleheader rained out. To make up these games, they will play two doubleheaders when they visit Charlotte next week. Thursday’s starter Brad Case completed his warmups before the rain came, so he will be pushed back to Sunday now. He was originally supposed to pitch on Wednesday, but that game was rained out too.

Prospect-Watch-Morgantown

Morgantown won 6-4 over Staten Island. JC Flowers made his fourth appearance and after giving up one run over six innings in the first three games, he allowed four runs (three earned) over three innings. Flowers allowed six hits and two walks, with two strikeouts. In nine innings he has allowed 19 base runners. Jesus Valles has moved to the bullpen for now and he followed Flowers. Valles went five shutout innings on two hits and two walks, with five strikeouts. His previous outing was six shutout innings, which made it odd that he was moved to relief.

The Black Bears had six runs on six hits and six walks. Eight players reached base at least once. Cory Wood had two walks and scored twice. Matt Gorski had a single, walk, run scored and his seventh stolen base. Kyle Wilkie hit a single, walked and scored a run. Brendt Citta had a single, walk and run scored.

Bristol had their game suspended with one out in the fifth due to lightning, then rain. Santiago Florez threw 4.1 innings with two runs and five strikeouts. Jesus Valdez went 3-for-3 with a homer and Chase Murray hit his first pro home run. The problem is that the two teams don’t meet again this year, so the stats won’t count.
