Mason Martin Named Florida State League Player of the Week

Published:

On Monday afternoon, the Florida State League named Bradenton Marauders first baseman Mason Martin as their Player of the Week. Earlier in the day, he was named as our Player of the Week for the third time. He was already the only player to repeat as our Player of the Week this year.

Bradenton had eight games this week, thanks to no days off and a doubleheader. Martin played in all of them and hit .346/.433/.923 in 26 at-bats, with three doubles, four homers, 11 RBIs, nine runs and four walks. In 19 games with the Marauders, he is hitting .262/.400/.607, with six doubles, five homers and 14 walks. He posted a .935 OPS in 82 games with Greensboro this year before being promoted to High-A on July 9th. Martin has hit 28 home runs this season already and picked up 99 RBIs, with exactly five weeks left in the season.

John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
