Pirates Recall Jordan Luplow; Clay Holmes Optioned to Bradenton

Published:

The Pittsburgh Pirates recalled outfielder Jordan Luplow on Friday afternoon and optioned pitcher Clay Holmes to Indianapolis.

Holmes started on Wednesday night in Los Angeles for the Pirates after pitching just once in two weeks. The bench was short one man for the last few games, while the Pirates needed reinforcements for the bullpen. This move allows the Pirates to bring up their best hitter right now in Indianapolis, while returning them to a five-man bench. Thanks to the day off yesterday, everyone in the bullpen is rested for tonight’s game.

Luplow batted .297/.382/.487 in 77 games with Indianapolis. Holmes will return to Indianapolis, where he can pitch regularly in the rotation in case he’s needed as a depth option again.

UPDATE 8:13 PM: I saw the Pirates put Bradenton for Holmes and figured it was a mistake. Just realized that he is going to Bradenton because Indianapolis and Altoona are going on their All-Star break, so for him to stay on a five-day schedule to start, he has to go to Bradenton to do that. Sorry about the mix-up.
