Pirates Activate Francisco Cervelli; Option Jacob Stallings

Published:

The Pittsburgh Pirates activated Francisco Cervelli from the disabled list (concussion) on Thursday afternoon in time for tonight’s game against the New York Mets. Cervelli is in the starting lineup and behind the plate. He was placed on the disabled list on July 14th. To make room on the 25-man roster, Jacob Stallings was optioned to Indianapolis.

Cervelli has hit well when healthy this season, batting .243/.379/.460 in 60 games. He has played just five games since June 21st. He has taken some grounders at first base, so we could see him play often while Elias Diaz still gets time behind the plate.

Stallings has played just six games this season despite being on the roster three times, and only two of those games were starts.

When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects.
